I know that this has been discussed before but given that prices change very quickly I thought I would ask the current situation.

How much a decent desktop in Seoul at the moment, obviously decent is a relative term and prices vary but in general looking for nothing particularly fancy just something to watch DVDs/DIVx, maybe play Football Manager and use the net.

Anyone recently bought one or know of any rough idea on price. Just trying to guage the pros and cons of bringing a laptop from home or buying a desktop in Korea.

Thanks

prices are for the tower, monitor NOT included.

Entry level system - 400k won
Mid level system - 650k
High end system 1 million
Top end game system - 2 million

All will do what you are asking (except the game).

A low end system with an upgraded video card will do it all.

Your basic home user who is NOT a power gamer will be fine with a system priced around 600k won at Yongsan. It will last for about 5 years before you need to upgrade again.

A serious gamer will want to spend about a million at Yongsan (add 30% if you buy at a department store),

www.dell.ca

Dimension C521
Space Saving Performance
AMD Sempron Processor 3400+
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 1DIMM
80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache
48X CD-RW/ DVD Combo Drive

Featured at
$399 plus 14% PST/GST =$451.00 Cdn.

Your gigagate computer at W400,000 is $505.00 Cdn.

Hm. Is Korea actually cheaper? Are the differences worth $54.00 Cdn? I'd be inclined to say yes but I am no expert. Just a reference point.

The 3400+, however, only has 256 KiB L2-Cache)

The Pentium D 805 on the other hand is made of two 90-nm process Pentium 4 Prescott cores put together in a single die with 1 MiB of Level 2 (L2) cache per core.

Apples to apples.

With an 80 gig larger HDD on the Korean system and the 128 meg PCI-E video card I would say they are comparable systems but the Korean one is slightly better bang for the buck.

The other differences are that the power cord can just plug right in and you don't have to drag it here on the airplane if you get the Korean one.

Really though there is no signigicant difference in price on entry level DESKTOP systems.

It would be 1/2 the price of a comparable laptop which is what the OP was asking.

True but why bother paying for it, assuming its cheaper to buy a desktop without an OS, when I arleady have a copy.

Oh and another thing, which might sound a bit stupid, do keyboards in Korea only have hangul or do they have ones with hangul and/or english ?

They are bilingual and have both sets of charactors on the keys.
