Quote:
Students, Professors Fight Against Cheating
"The most serious problem in our society is a lack of awareness among school authorities of academic dishonesty," Oh Young-hee, a psychology professor at Duksung Women's University in northern Seoul, said in an interview with The Korea Times.

Oh said that the indifference among school authorities, including teachers, enables students to easily cheat on the exams because they are not worried about being caught. "About 63 percent of some 700 college students in my survey answered they have never been punished after being caught for cheating on exams," she said.

... she said that universities should introduce an honor system.

She said that about 25.2 percent of high school students were found to first cheat on exams in elementary school, while 57.9 percent first cheated in middle school in 2003.

Some kid ratted out his friend for trying to cheat.

The funny part was, he said 'Teacher, Brian is hacking.'

I asked where the computer was.

When I studied languages at university, I couldn't help but notice how the best scorers(in homework assignments; terrible in speaking) scored the highest pre-exam scores. These prats were "recognized" as exceptional competants on paper. All they wanted was to up their averages in order to get into higher unrelated degrees.

The "informal" collaboration wasn't even termed or recognized as a deviation from the honor of honest work. I suppose, winning requires no justification regardless on who the prepetrators are.

Before going into any amateur bout(boxing) my coach used to say; "Everyone loves a winner!"

Ends justify the means??????

Part of it must come from that fact that school is so much copying and memorising and so little thinking for oneself.

I took the GRE here in Sept 2001--interesting as hell that they've phased it out.
Anyone else know about TOEFL "hoo-kee"? Basically, test takers run right from the center to the nearest PC Bang and upload their versions of the tests they just took, to the best of their memories, etc. Then others get on and, in what I assume is some kind of wiki format, add to and improve upon the material. ETS changes the TOEFL question bank once a month, usually around the 15th, so by the 13th or so there's a huge "hoo-kee" (don't know if I'm using that term correctly) on the appropriately named Hacker's TOEFL website. Other methods include in-ear microphones to record the listening portion.

THey should phase out the TOEFL! It must have been much harder to develop the cheating bank with the GRE, considering the far smaller number of test takers.

I'm of two minds, though--I don't love ETS, what with the power they have over American education. Changes to curricula will be forthcoming with the new SAT adding to the Shrub's No Child Left Behind!

Most of my students are compulsive cheaters. It's amazing to me sometimes how ingrained it is in their habits. Very often, while giving a test, I will stand directly in front of a student, tell them not to look at Soandso's paper, the student says "Yes, teacher" and immediately starts looking at Soandso's paper again, right there in front of me! It's mind-blowing.

What I really don't understand is why students would cheat at a hagwon. They don't get grades and the tests are purely for recap and assessment purposes. What could possibly be the motivation for cheating in a hagwon?

Mebbe it's part of the culture. Just, cheat.. whatever you must do to achieve "the right answer".

Q~

hacking is the new konglish term.

When I served on the discpline committee of my varisty we had case after case of academic dishonesty come up. I can only remember two non-Korean/chinese cases in the 50 or so I sat in on.

My wife took the IELTS in both China and Korea. In Korea they were much more relaxed about rules. She asked why and they said that Koreans dont cheet as much as chinese!!

As for my students, they will do anything they can to get a better mark, except actualy learn Englsih.
