Hi everyone, I was hoping for some advice.
For some strange reason I have my heart set on teaching in Korea, and I have been looking for a position since summer began. I knew from the onset that I would have a hard time getting a position mainly because I'm black and I know there's the preference for the "American-girl-next-door-look" (which technically I am). And even with that preference I read about the hard time some white folks have with some Koreans...
Anyways, am I kidding myself? Are there schools and places open enough in Korea to look beyond my race |

Yes, there are places that will look beyond your skin color and hire you. They are fewer and farther between than the ones looking for the blond 24 year old, but they are out there. Don't give up hope. You might consider the EPIK/GEPIK route--they hire people to teach in the public schools. So does Seoul Metropolitan.
Another possibility: since most people prefer to be in Seoul (I don't know why except that they might be crazy) you might consider a smaller city. They have fewer applicants. Maybe a chain school in a smaller city? (Pagoda, YBM)
Good luck. |

I have a friend who is black who worked in korea a few years ago. I think she had a good time but Koreans DO tend to be racist so be aware of that.
It's not impossible to get a job here if you're black. It just makes it a little harder. |

I've known many african-americans in Korea who did just fine. I've probably met a good 6-8 throughout the time here, and each one I met seemed to have been here a good solid few years as well. |
