|
|
I'm looking at schools in both places, but I can't really find any info for either city on the web. Even Google couldn't give me any relevant hits. I'm crossing the ocean, it's my first time out of the country, and so anything I can learn to prepare myself ahead of time is of great value . I'd like to hear anything on either city, good or bad. Proximity to Seoul, amenities, how foreingers are treated, culture, touristy things to do, night-life, etc.
Thanks,
Stephen |

I'm in Ilsan. It's one of the nicest cities in Korea, and in many ways is unlike any other one I've lived in or even visited. It's the least smelly and noisy city I l know, with the most parks of any place I've seen so far. It's close enough to Seoul - takes about an hour to Seoul by bus or subway. Their idea of culture seems more oriented to shopping and pop culture, and there ain't a lot of touristy things to do here, but there's other touristy places a bus or subway ride away. Not sure about the nightlife, as my g/f and I don't out much, but from all I've seen it's a really nice place to go out. There's at least one bar that's supposed to be almost exclusively English teachers, as there are a lot of 'em here.
You will probably want to bring a whole lot of things that you take for granted in normal life. For me it's good food that I miss, so I always load up with about 10 - 20kg of extras that I just can't get in Korea, or cost a ridiculously high price. Some others do the same for medicine, computer gear, electronics, whatever. Find more people from the same country as you, chat to them, and find out what they miss.
Just my thoughts.

Agree with the above, Ilsan is a great place to live. There are most of the big shops you have in Seoul, a scattering of foreign restaurants, proximity to the capital and some amazing countryside as well as at least two expat oriented bars in Jungbalsan. If you want to know any more, pm me. |

I am up in Ilsan, just stay away from Daehwa it gets kind of boring up here. Land yourself a nice gig down in Juyeop, or Jeongbalsan and you have it made.
I knew of the one Foreigner Bar down at the end of La Festa, but I never knew they were two Foreigner Bars.
Where is the second one? |

There is Don't Go and Soul Train, both in La Festa. If you spot a large blonde Aussie there this weekend with his rowdy pommie mates, be nice and buy him a beer. |

I went to Ilsan today for the first time with a school trip (about half an hour from where I live; and where I live is less than half an hour away from Hongdae, Downtown, Itaewon etc) and it looks really nice. I find that most of the apartments on far outskirts like that tend to be really brand new and nice - so you could get lucky I'd say. Be wary, however, of the need for taxis when you go out getting mashed with your mates in inner-Seoul somewhere (subway closes at midnight). Could set you back $30 or more - still hardly a fortune, but it'll pi55 you off if you do it every weekend. There'll be plenty of good places to eat/drinkl/socialize in Ilsan, however. |
