Australian outcry over women jibe

Julia Gillard is deputy to Labor leader Kevin Rudd
An Australian senator has caused a storm of protest for describing a female politician as "deliberately barren" and therefore unfit to govern.
Bill Heffernan said Labor Party deputy leader Julia Gillard did not understand the public because she had no children.

He has since apologised for the "inappropriate" comments, first made last year but repeated again this week.

Analysts say the incident will be an embarrassment for his close friend, Prime Minister John Howard.

Mr Howard has made it clear he does not support Mr Heffernan's comments.

Heffernan has often made comments like this. I believe he does so with Howards approval. It is part of the strategy they use, it allows the party to make those comments, and Howard to distance himself from them.

Howard is one of the cleverest politicians on the Australian scene for some time.

Sort of like Hanson, with brains and experience.

Dead right M.

Heffernan is Howard's number one muppet for mouthing the cheap shots Howard wants said, but doesn't want to be seen to be said by him. Hewson, a former Liberal party leader for those who don't know, made that very clear some time ago.

Heffernan copped a bollocking after accusing a High Court judge of cruising for gay prostitutes. Said in parliment, under parlimentary privelege and totally false.
