Hello;
I've been asked to teach my TOEFL class - which is just a class of older kids, at this hogwon; I understand it's technically supposed to be a class for preparing them for the TOEFL test? - English to use in various situations they'd get into in English-speaking countries. Banks, restaurants, etc.
I've decided to treat it as an episodic deal, where the kids will pretend they're exchange students or something similiar. The first one will be arriving at the airport ... I've noted they should learn phrases for asking for help; looking for stores, security, baggage claim, taxies; currency exchange; how to get a bus ticket, etc....
Now, I don't actually have much experience with airports, so I'm basically taking what I did when I got to Korea as a template.
I also want to cover situations like banks, stores, hospitals, emergency situations, schools (different classes), taking a bus somewhere, and so on. If anyone has some ideas on what kinds of vocab or phrases would be well-suited to such situations, or has links to sites that deal with these things, I'd be grateful if you'd share. I have some ideas, but I know I could do with more.
I'm supposed to give them a list of phrases, and I think I'll be giving them a sample dialogue or two, and perhaps some questions on the worksheet, plus whatever I'll ask them verbally. Hm ... I think I could spend a few classes - more likely, half a class at a time - on the airport alone. I think there's going to be a lot of trial and error here, but if anyone's done this already and can share, please do! I've never really had to do this before, and I'm a little intimidated.
Thanks for your time. |

TOEFL in its current form tests the language that people will need for studying abroad. To that end, most of the listening segments are either simple lectures or conversations students might have "around campus". I suggest you download the two free tests from ETS and try one yourself. The name of the software is called "PowerPrep", just google it. |

Hi,
You might want to have a look at this book: A conversation book 1: English in Everyday Life. It has stuff on those situations you want to write role plays on. The stuff is basic, but a good starting point and has a lot of vocab you could use.
P.S It is available in most big Korean bookshops or through Amazon. |
