Have you ever been asked to work without a proper visa? Has your boss asked or pressured you into working at locations not approved by immigration? Have you ever been asked or told to give an A grade to a student who didn't attend class or didn't deserve an A (maybe not entirely illegal but borderline)? etc. etc.

Actually my old boss asked me to lie about my taxes. I told her she should reconsider ever mentioning that to me again.

At my first two jobs in '97 and '98 this happened but not since then.

Mine hasn't asked me to do anything illegal, but I'm not sure what the deal is with my taxes. He's never withheld taxes from my pay, and when I asked him about it he told me that he would just take care of it at the end of my contract. Question

RR: That's not illegal...it's immoral, and unfair to the students who actually worked for the grade. I had the same thing happen to me last semester when I was asked to give A grades to PE students who had never come to class but had done well in their sport. I went to the PE class leader and asked him to ask his classmates how they felt about it. After all, it would be THEIR grades that would be affected as we grade on a curve. The verdict was that it was totally unfair. I told them that I would go to bat for them if necessary and NOT give A grades to students who hadn't come to class. I gave Fs where deserved and never heard a word about it.

As to the OP's topic!! I only was asked to do that at one school...and that's the school I ended up doing a runner from! Goes to show!!

I was forced to change grades a few times. In fact once I had to re-test an entire class because the teacher felt I'd been too strict with them. It wasn't possible that they hadn't done a good job.

I was asked several times to work on Saturdays. Not illegal but against my contract.

Is going on a school trip technically illegal because you're not at your designated workplace?

Was farmed out to a few local schools from a hogwon. This was long ago, before we knew it was illegal. Great experience, as it was my only time inside a proper Korean classroom.

Not so much asked. Yeah, I have been expected to do something illegal, to teach some classes before my visa trip to Japan. It wasn't treated like a big deal because to their mind it's a small thing. I'm sure I could have insisted on waiting the few days first. Given the furor this year over ESL teachers, I'd probably not do it again, even one day is a day too much if the police decide to crackdown on it.

That's not even borderline. It's nowhere near illegal. It's unethical though. Thank goodness there's a huge divide between law and morality in free countries. And no, I haven't been asked to do anything like that.

simple thought, does it seem that we (westerners) would be more opposed to doing something immoral (like giving grades) than illegal? I myself, would consider doing something illegal depending on my situation, my other dispotes, potential danger....
but if i was asked to change a grade, i would tell them to F off.

Yes, at our previous hagwon. We worked two additional weeks because the owner cocked up the visas for the new teachers. First and last time. Smile

Haha, my old hogwan stopped letting me fill out report cards because I refused to lie. Instead wongjongnim-babo had the KTs fill out the FTs part in a different coloured pen.
