_________
Keane's Departure to Help Park JS

Park Ji-sung could take over as a starter next year for Manchester United with the expected departure of veteran Roy Keane.

The aging Keane recently said he would like to stay with United for another year or two, but that the team is unlikely to re-sign him after his contract expires after this season.
__________

This is a bit daft. Obviously this reporter hasn't seen Man Utd play during the last 10 years.

Not sure if he's the new Keane but he was darn impressive against Fulham.

I thought Ferguson was making Alan Smith the holding midfielder.

He was good against Fulham but still miles behind Rooney he had an awesome match he was everywhere and really ran the show!

As for a replacement for Keane i think if he does leave then Fergie will go out and pay top money for Scott Parker and it will be a good move.Smith is a good squad player but not much more.

Then again Ill probably be proved wrong as Fergusons mistakes when judging players are a lot fewer than mine!

Scott Parker!!!! Please Bill!!!! I know Fergie's ability to pick semi decent players has waned somewhat and Glazer has plunged the club into tremendous debt with his takeover, but Parker is not good enough.

It has to be Ballack.

Good to see Park have his first good game though against Fulham. Whether he's able to play as well against bigger and better teams remains to be seen.

I was inpressed with park ji Sungs' effort on saturday night..

Can he keep it up all the season with a game or 2 a week (he hadn't played a full game for a while), i don't think he can but even an occasional game like that should keep him in the main squad for a long time...

And he has the potential to get even better yet..

the smile on his face when he set up van Nistilroy for the goal, i thought that was great...good on him

I enjoyed the smile too.

Park was awesome, bless him. He set up all 3 goals. Rooney played semi-well by his standards and if memory serves his only significant contribution in the second half was missing a relatively straightforward opportunity to make it 2-4 and 3 points guaranteed.

Park's marauding runs from midfield are just what we need. I'm friends with Giggs again too because he runs at defenders and creates the odd chance for others - unlike the insipid Scholes and Fletcher.

My gripe is that it doesn't seem possible for M.U. to accommodate all of Ruud, Roon, Ronnie, Giggs, Park at once unless we play with just one holder (Keane or Smith) or play 3-5-2 - neither of which are gonna happen.

St Etienne's Didier Zokora has been mentioned a bit in the English and French press lately, make of that what you will...

Players like Keane/Cantona/Schmeichel et al aren't easily replaced, it's easier to change the tactics - and the best holding midfielders seem to be at the bigger clubs already. I think Park is being lined up to slowly replace Giggs, rather than play in a more central role.

I think it's more likely that Utd will change tactics and buy an attacking midfielder like Ballack on a Bosman in the summer or perhaps even Graveson, bearing in mind Utd are skint (Glazer)

I think this Jon Obi Mikel situation is very interesting at the moment as well. United's midfield next year could be:

Attacking: Giggs, Park, Ronaldo, Rooney (depending on formation)
Central: Smith, Mikel, Ballack, Fletcher and Scholes.

How do you see it playing out?

The way united are playing with Giggs/Ronaldo/Park wide(2 of the 3) plus Ruud up front means that Rooney is effectivly playing where Ballack would. Remember it was him that threaded the ball to Park, to set up the third goal, from inside his own half. He also was covering back like a maniac. If you persist with this system then a true takling midfielder is what you need Fletcher wont cut it either.

I still say Parker, hes been out of the picture for a year wasted at chelsea but Gerard aside i rate him the best English midfielder(assuming Scholes calls it quits at the end of the year to).

BillinKorea,
I love you dearly, but come on son! United are one of the biggest and most famous clubs in the world and can attract the best players in the world, even when they are trophyless. Parker will not be the man to fill Roy Keanes shoes, he's barely played at the top level. I like the look of Smith in that position, I really think he can develop there. He has everything you want from a player in that position and having been a striker you know he'll score a few as well.....but trust, the hunt is already on at United for a big name summer signing in that position. If United signed Parker, I would be as dissapointed as any Liverpool fan who has to put up with watching Peter Crouch in red. Embarassing.
As for the Korean boy, he looks really good. Again though, holding midfielder??? Hes a wide man isn't he?? Or at the very least, attacking midfielder. Fergies played enough players out of position recently, please don't do it again!

I totally agree, no way Park is a holding midfielder. He's an attacker and should be played as such. Smith has the potential to grow into a decent midfielder but it's no way a definite.

I totally disagree with you on this one baldrick. Over the past few years Ronaldinho and Robben have both snubbed United in favour of Barcelona and Chelsea respectively. Seems like the days of United having their pick of the world's best players are coming to an end.

Yeah agreed, probably the way I worded it. Emphasis on the 'one of the best'. They may not be at the peak any more where they once were, and players still chose other destinations then, but they can still attract a better class of player than Scott Parker to fill the void. The stigma playing for United and the club itself holds is stong enough for that. Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ronaldo, Ferdinand - they are all there because of that stigma.
OK - clubs that have more pulling power at the moment.......Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Chelsea and Real Madrid. After that, I think United are right up there.
I'd say the absolute 'pick' of the worlds best players that united have wanted over the years we have NEVER got anyway - ronaldo, ronaldhino, thuram, shevchenko - they all want to play in Italy or Spain anyway, not England. What do you think??!!
