Asia-Pacific region boasts world's best -- and worst -- cities
Tokyo was ranked 16th and Auckland 20th along with Osaka, Kobe and Wellington. Hong Kong was ranked 41st while Seoul and Singapore tied for 54th place.
Vancouver in western Canada topped the global list compiled by research firm the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Melbourne came in second and three other Australian cities -- Perth, Adelaide and Sydney -- were in the top 10, with Brisbane at 11th place. Also among the 10 best cities were Vienna, Geneva, Zurich, Toronto and Calgary -- making Canada and Australia the most liveable countries based on their representation in the top tier of the list.
The EIU ranked 127 cities on the basis of five criteria: stability, health care, culture and the environment, education and infrastructure.

Just an innocent question: Doesn't it rain a lot in Vancouver? |

With low crime, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed infrastructure, Canada has the most liveable destinations in the world," an EIU statement said. |
Did this study factor the body-fat percentages of the local women? If not, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Other than that, go Canada. |

Actually, Vancouver is considered the "fittest" city in Canada. Having lived in many places in North America, including Vancouver, I would agree. Huge Asian population, too.
However, I must wonder if they really studied the cities they listed in the survey. Although I love Vancouver, housing costs are off the chart and healthcare in the province is pretty poor - at least compared to Alberta, Ontario, etc. Sometimes I felt the premium to live there was not worth it. |

ChimpumCallao,
I was thinking that Singapore should be ranked closer to Hong Kong. |

I used to live in KL, and everyone from Singapore would complain that it was sterile and boring. |

hmmmmmm.....Seoul or Singapore??? Singapore any day of the week...the hardest part about living in Singapore would be the fact that political dissent is frowned upon (Singaporeans biggest complaint)but hey, the flip side is you get a clean, safe, and exciting city-state! The night life has Seoul beat and the food......OMG...Seoul does not hold a candle.... |

I think Vancouver deserves the prize hands down.
Having lived in Melbourne and Sydney, and having spend a lot of time in loads of Asian cities, I have to say that Vancouver rocks....or maybe I'm just homesick? It's hard to beat the awe inspiring mountains coupled with the fantastic ocean views. Not to mention the endless choices of cuisines from around the globe.
Money draining city aside, there's no place I'd rather call home. |

Yeah, Vancouver is great.
But bloody expensive to live there!
I was born in metro Vancouver (Burnaby) and would love to settle down there but the land and housing prices are unbelievable. (Nearby Vancouver Island I'll probably end up at.)
They should have considered cost of living as a balancing factor in their rankings. Vancouver wouldn't be in the Top 20 then! |

To Each His Own:
Lived in Hong Kong 15 years and it is an awesome place-I loved it and may return.
Singapore is nice and in close proximity to some other nice places--no way would I rank it with Seoul..it has got to be a bad joke..
well it depends on their criteria...I think they are stuck in suburbia..
anyway, I totally disagree with their findings..not that it matters because it doesn't |

RR,
I as thinking that Seoul is a filthy dump that pales in comparison to living in my dog's ass, much less Singapore.
And having been to both HK and Sing I agree...although I would place Singapore just a bit higher due to yummier (and more varied) food, Sentosa Island, and its impecability. |

Calgary? It's just. so. cold!!!!! Obviously weather didn't factor into the criteria. I was flying in and out of Calgary in Dec. 2000, and at one point, I thought I was going to cry because it was just so bitter. No joke. Man, those prarie winds are fierce.
That being said, though, I think I could muster up enough um, stamina (is that the word I'm looking for?) to brave Calgary because I swear I would do just about anything for a Tim Horton's donut. |

All of these lists are incredibly subjective.
For me, I prefer a nice climate, ocean access, beautiful downtown, good combination of people, good food, etc. Definetely Honolulu, San Diego, Sydney, Singapore, Barcelona, Hong Kong, etc. I guess it would be more quality of life issues which would include ocean and a good downtown.
Zurich, Adelaide, Calgary, Geneva, etc. would NOT make my top 10 list. |
