I'm bored at work right now, and as of yet none of my students have shown. They tend to skip the first class so that they can avoid introducing themselves. Rolling Eyes
In ten minutes I'll be able to go home early, but first!

A brief reference to the legendary Sonic Youth on another post inspired me to write this request. Basically, if you're into Indie rock, and you're like me, you know that getting your hands on new stuff in Korea can be a bit tricky.

If anyone wants to share, please let me know what you're listening to these days, why it's good etc.

I've just gotten into Superchunk frontman's side project Portastatic....sort of like watered -down Chunk really.

And, of course, THE MARS VOLTA. That s-hit is crazy.

Thanks

Hi Red.

I don't really understand your post.

Is it just a really dumb way of saying that you don't know?

Portatastic is decent. Recently I've been listening to a lot of the Swirlies, Decemberists, Songs:Ohia, and Deerhoof. If you're on Soulseek then add Drunken_Tiger to your list. Where are you located?

I posted Decemerists' Apology Song Lyrics in one of the song threads recently. Great song. I've only heard that one and 16 Military Wives, but from that small sampling they give me a sort of TMBG vibe...

Word on the Street is that 'Wolf Parade' is the next 'Arcade Fire'.

I have some some burning questions regarding indie rock, ever since 'alternative' became 'top 40' in the early 90s I've been so confused...

How big does a band need to get before it's no longer 'Indie'?

Can I hate Mars Volta and Sonic Youth still be considered to be an Indie-lover?

Now I know why John Lennon called himself a Mocker. Confused

sorry to be anal...

but does indie = "a derivative of independent - therefore devoid of attachment to any major corporate label/distribution house"

or does it mean

"band with three-five skinny guys (maybe one of them is fat but he's either the bassist or the drummer) and maybe one girl but she's either the bassist or she does something completely superfluous, she's the singer's girlfriend anyways... the dudes in the band are known for mumbling/whining a lot, searching for clothes that used to cost 50 cents but now cost 50 bucks... lauding bands that nobody has heard of/gives a shit about... two of the band members are staunch vegetarians, but one is an avowed meat eater... they all use fender guitars and fender amps or a really old silvertone that they bought at a yard sale... they all drive the same (or similar) vehicles and none of them can fight"?

just checking.

Let me also add to that list...... the band has at least one guitarist who flirts with bisexuality....

actually, you're wrong. the band has at least one guitarist who dates only japanese girls.

Oh, right. Sorry I got the two things mixed up. Rolling Eyes

well you're not far off. dating japanese girls exclusively... being gay... they're not too far removed from each other.

I'm definitely not into the revivalist stuff either.

Dirty was what got me into Sonic Youth in the first place. It came out when I was about 15, right age to start getting into music as a hobby I guess. I used to be a big Dinosaur JR. fan around that time.

My friends and I made an hour [Korea] skate video this summer. For some of the audio tracks one of the skaters wanted to throw in Franz Ferdinand or Interpol or some such thing and we had to veto it.

The Weakerthans are from my hometown so I went through Uni listening to their stuff.

Do you know if any of the Fugazi guys have side projects? [Minor threat aside?]

i'd love to see that skate video.

as far as fugazi goes - ian mackaye has a side project called the evens with some girl who may or may not be his girlfriend (it's not cynthia connolly?) and i know for sure that the rest of the guys are at least active in some respect.

you can see the evens performing on pancake mountain (DC kids show) here:
