Well, I must say Ohno has a lot of courage. After all the death threats from Koreans, constantly.....(check out his webpage) He came to Korea, and WON! All the boos, and the objects that were thrown at him, and he ends up winning. The guy is classy.

This was on his website

The legend grows
Apolo won gold in an exhilarating 1000m final today in Seoul after being disqualified two days in a row, showing once again what a brilliant come-from-behind skater he is. Apolo started off in 4th and slowly picked his way forward, taking the lead with a lap to go. He also beat Ahn and Lee on their home ice which has to make it all sweeter. What an amazing champion! Congratulations Apolo! You did it -- one of the sweetest victories ever!

And then -- Apolo did it all over again in the 3000 superfinal! He took control of that race and won it too, with a terrific burst of speed in the closing laps. His victory in the 3k means Apolo also snatches the overall title for World Cup #2 in the day's last race.

I don't have words to express how HUGE this performance is. But think about it -- ankle injury, riot police, angry fans, meddling reporters, two disqualifications -- and Apolo calmly puts it behind him and goes on to win the whole freakin' thing. WAY TO GO, OHNO!

Look at this thing of beauty!

1000m victory - Apolo wins, Jiajun

What I thought was sad in that whole Olympic debacle was the Korean women short track skaters wrapped up nearly all the golds and set world records. And a Korean would be hard put to remember a single name...

And what I thought was most disgusting was when the Korean guy thought he won the gold, he grabbed Korean flag and started waving it around, but once he was disqualified he tossed the flag onto the ice in anger. Was Korea to blame? Did he have to toss his nation's flag onto the ground like so much trash?

I remember that as well, he spiked the flag...........

I also remember during the world cup, I watched the U.S play south korea, and when the koreans scored they ran to the corner and did some kind of strange dance. I thought it looked really weird, FINALLY (just this year) I saw a recap of it, and a Korean friend told me that the soccer players did that in "revenge" for Ohno. I guess to korea it was "revenge" but to the rest of the world it looked like some really dorky looking dance.

And the phrase "Ohh, nooo" entered the Korean Lexicon.

Don't mession that to my mom. She likes skating and was completely insulted by the whole thing because Korean women skaters weren't disqualified for elbowing other skaters during the World Championship that was held prior to the Olympics. For once, she was happy to see a judgment against a Korean skater. Karma.

Same here. I remember telling my students that I thought so and that I was disgusted that nobody seemed to care. I also added that had Ohno done the same thing with the American flag, he would have been a marked man.

I believe he is an American of Japanese descent.

Ohno supposedly faked a tumble during the 2002 Olympics to get the Korean speed-skater disqualified. The 2002 anti-American hate-a-thon, which is often associated with the dead schoolgirls, might more accurately be dated as having started with Ohno. It was shortly after that that the infamous f*cking USA song(which referenced the speedskating incident) was released.

part japanese but all american.
this happened when the two middle schools were still fresh in everyones memory.
The korean guy who was winning the race blocked apollo ohno from passing. Basically the korean put his elbow in Ohno's face. Ohno had to move his face out of the way of the guys elbow. The ref saw that and disqualified the korean. Koreans thought the Ohno had over reacted. that the ref had been bought off by the americans and that this was part of a conspiracy by the americans to make humiliate korea. Or something like that. I got to hear six months of I want to kill Ohno. I was so sick of it.

Ohno faked nothing. He made a WTF gesture. The the judges reviewed the event and disqualified the Korean skater.

Then the tantrum began.

Then, Jay Leno made a joke about it on The Tonight Show, and the Korean parliament passed a motion demanding that NBC apologize.

I remember watching that!

Leno said: The Korea guy was so upset with the ruling that he went home and kicked his dog.................................................and then he ate him.

The Korean community went crazy, Leno said "but it was based on fact". Wink

I am usually happy to cheer for Korea, but I turned off their women's handball game in disgust when I saw what nastiness they were resorting to.

I went to a church a few months later, and heard the pastor using those barbarians as an example of the underdog, and then *compared them to early Christians facing persuection.* I left.
