so i bought a used Toshiba Portege 4000 for $400, I'm not sure if I got ripped off yet or not... it has XP on it, but SP1 and some of the Fn keys like "screen dim" and all that jazz seem not to work...

i have a newer Dell laptop in my apartment which serves as my desktop replacement i bought the Portege for portability and cheapness, not power... all i really plan on using it for is Audiomulch inbetween classes and reading PDFs...

eventually i want to install one of Samsung's solid state HDs on it and a 2nd battery... so has anyone heard anymore about the flash HDs? will they be compatible with a P3 notebook?

the thing kinda smells "hot" after a few minutes of running also, i wonder if the battery is fragged or on the way to being fragged... if that is the case, can i replace it with a standard battery... or do i have to pay uber-cash for some older model Toshiba battery... since portability is the goal of the machine i will probably replace the DVD drive with an additional battery...

it went from a full charge, displaying 3 hours of battery life and couldn't finish playing a CD... bad battery? it's supposed to have excellent powersaving features but i have yet to see them... just using it for casual audio applications the battery life seems true to what the meter reads...

i also want to upgrade the RAM, it's supposed to top out at 1GB, will any RAM do?

thanks for any advice...

Batteries don't last that long average life is about 2-3 years. So its a good possibility that the battery is dead. You can buy a replacment if you need too.

Ram it depends I remember Toshiba had its own specific memory standard, but it could be just plain SODIMM SDRAM.. Max memory will be 1 gig. I think since its a p3 it will be pc 133 ram.

They should be the same HD.. 2.5". I had a solid state at my job back in Canada and it was the same as a standard 2.5" HD from a notebook. Difference was that it was a military grade and it cost about 2k USD. The only significant change might be that they will introduce a SATA 2.5" disk but you can get a converter connector to have it compatible with mini IDE. (I have this setup in my notebook) Samsung doesn't make a solid state drive that I was aware off. They are going to make a Hybrid drive tho. Any way samsung may produce memory modules for solid state HD's. There are lost of manufacturers that make solid state. Just google solid state HD.

Oh I get about 3.5 hours with my bick notebook. I use a program for powersavings but I don't think it will work with your notebook
