Americans are allowed to visit Korea for up to 30 days with no visa, correct? So, after your E-2 visa expires, can you just go to Japan and re-enter the country and stay for another 30 days? Whether it's to look for a job or just hang out or whatever (NOT to teach illegally).
I guess actually there are two questions here--is it possible, and how kindly would immigration look on it. |

As an American, you could get a C-3 visa which has to be applied ahead of time but allows you to stay in Korea for up to 90 days at a time and is good for 60 months (5 years). You do have to list a reason for why you want an extended visa (i forgot how much it costs, i think under $100). I am not sure how you would apply for it while living in Korea ( I applied at a Korean embassy in the States) but a call to immigration would probably tell you exactly where you need to send your application for the visa. Although it does cost money, it is good deal because next year (for that matter- the next 5) if you decide to look carefully for another job, after leaving the country when your e-2 is finished, you could reenter again for another 90 days under this visa while looking for a job. C-3 is NOT a work visa, basically it is an extended tourist visa. I got this visa when i reentered Korea to marry my husband but didn't want to work right away(i am american too) and knew that i would be there longer than 30 days before we got legally married after which i could have applied for a F-1 or F2 (spousal visa). I applied for this visa after having worked in korea on e-2 visas for 3 years so i don't think they will get suspicious if you tell the truth of why you want to stay. Any specific questions on it, pm me. |

Since you are here on an E2. Just before it expires, go to the immigration office and get a b2 tourist visa for after your E2 expires. No problem or hassel. They do them all the time. |

What's a B-2? The Korean embassy's website doesn't list any B visas. And actually, I'm in the States for the next few months. |

In answer to your first question, yes. At the end of my first contract, my E-2 expired, I went home to Canada for a while, and came back to Korea on a 30-day tourist visa I got on arrival. They asked me if I would be working in Korea, and I told them that I had re-signed a contract with my previous employer, but that it would not begin until next month. And that prior to starting work, I would do a visa run to Japan to get the E-2. They were fine with it. |

So if you went "HOME" to Canada, one would assume you hold a Canadian passport (not American one) and would return on a 6 month travellers visa and not a 30 day one?? |
