My friend is really into house music and I want to burn a CD of MP3s for her. Thing is I know diddly squat about it, so I hope people can tell me about some good artists & albums.

depends what sort of stuff she likes really- poppy stuff with vocals? Dark? Fast? Slow? Jazzy?

There are a few series of mix CDs that have been going for a while that you could look at / listen to- Hed Kandi, Global Underground, Renaissance- if you go to Amazon.com and search for those names you might get more of an idea (or just get totally confused)

I like the Fabric Live series- here's the new one http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009353PU/qid=1129076590/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-6502332-9901568?v=glance&s=music
but it's not strictly house music.

There are a lot of mixes you can listen to here
http://www.d-i-r-t-y.com/index2.html?first=http://www.d-i-r-t-y.com/mixes/
and with a bit of knowhow you could put one of them onto a CD for free.

DJs (i.e. if you want to burn dj mixes)

falcon, cassius, daft punk, together, sneak, jess and crabbe, 2 many djs etc etc

As a previous poster said, what styles are they into? Otherwise it's like finding a needle in a haystack...

I personally can't stand the hed kandi stuff anymore (a bit too poppy for me).

me neither, but I'm sexist so when the OP said it was a girl who was into house music, that's what I thought of first.

I'm not real clear on what comprises house music, but Mith turned me on to this band called Air. Couple a french guys who I've seen on the web described as house. I went out and got their "talkie walkie" album and it was phenomenal. Good all the way through, which is rare.

One house DJ who is really good if you can find him is DJ Scott Henry. I heard his album "Smile Sessions II" played straight through on the radio and started taping it after the first ten minutes. It became one of my all time favorite albums until the tape broke.

Never been able to find any of his albums in a store though.

Some Koreans have told me before they are into house and when they play me the CDs it is just crap...not house at all but a poor Korean imitation...

Classic, more commercial(which are probably more of what your friend is talking about) House Djs that i like come from the following...I'll even put them in alphabetcial order!!! Smile

ATB -"Don't Stop" "9PM till i come"
Armand Van Helden - "You Don't Know Me"
Basement Jaxx -"Lucky Star, Romeo, red Alert
Benny benassi - "satisfaction" (a current house fav here in Korea)
Daft Punk - "One More Time" "Around the World"
Everything But The Girl - "Missing"
faithless - "Insomnia"
Groove Armada -"Purple Haze" , "I See You Baby", "At The River"
Jam & spoon - "Right In The Night"
madison Avenue - "Don't Call Me Baby"
Roger sanchez - "Another chance"
Paul van Dyke(my fav) -"For An angel" "We Are alive" "Time of Our Lives"
"Tell Me Why"

and i wouldn't recommend these but for some OLD CLASSICS
S-Express - "S-Express"
The KLF - "3AMeternal" "Last Train to transcentral"
Black Box - "Ride On Time"

Thats a pretty good little compelation i made for you there Mashimoro...i think i might and go burn that CD myself Smile

I know some of it is pretty cheesy and commercial if you are deep into the scene but it is very listenable.....
