Hi guys, any advice or suggestion for pulling a sickie at my hagwon? it's kinda crucial, my girlfriend just surprised me with tickets for jejudo leaving this friday night at 7:40 ..... but i'm teaching up until 8:30. it's further complicated by the fact that i lied to take friday afternoon off the week before last (the 3-day weekend we just had) so that i could travel a little bit more. my boss and the other two k teachers rearranged classes around me and left me feeling guilty enough as it was.
i still have around 7 sick days left. do you generally need a medical certificate if you want a day off work here? at the moment i'm looking at nausea wednesday, heavier symptoms thursday followed by a phone call thursday night delivering the bad news. the truth, well my boss might understand but then again he might not, so i think an inventive lie like i used to pull as a kid working part-time is in order. |

Yes, I have some.
Never ever let the obligations of contracted work or that a number of people paid good money for your services get in the way of your pleasure. |

I've only pulled one sickie in Korea, on account of an idiot neighbour keeping me up all night. When I did, I just sent a text message to my supervisor and then turned off my phone. |

CRAP!!
You can pull a sickie, so you think you are going to get the money for the sick days that you didn't take NO!, is the school more than willing to screw around with hours and classes when it suits them YES!, so take the bloody sick days they're yours and they will just go to waste.
PS the best way to do it is to go to work and let him take you to the doctor, fake flu or cold, costs like 5,000 won and then you can oull the 'I need to go home and rest' line, works every time. |

I had a director that wouldn't allow me to call in sick. When I tried, she told me to go to the doctor and then bring a doctor's note to school, after which she wouldn't let me go back home...........
I should have been more assertive at the time, but it was only my second job in K-land and I didn't want to start a war with the new boss over a sick day.
The other teacher at the school tried to call in sick and the director kept phoning and finally sent her husband to drag the teacher in.......
I didn't bother trying to take anymore sick days after that.
But do what you like, just cause I was a spineless whimp doesn't mean you have to be.
Tell your wanjang to get stuffed. It's all according to the contract. |

The irony of arguing that the boss must accept a falsely claimed sick day be taken because the contract allows for real sick days off is amusing. |

Just say you need to go a couple hours early that day... I've done that a few times. I always said I had to go to blah blah blah to visit a friend who was leaving soon. Damn! It's Friday, he/she will understand.
Forget all that guilt stuff other posters may try to push on you, you or ten thousand others will sonn be taken advantage of and all that guilt will go away. |

Heck no, but in a real pinch I lick my palms, fake stomach pains, and then dance about the house in my underwear playing my clarinet. Later on I go over to my chum's house and steal his dad's car so we can go break out a lady friend of mine from school. Then we go loot and pillage most of the city while dodging our evil principle. Best part is I just love belting out the tunes to Louie Louie everytime a parade wanders by! |
