Hi, I am thinking of going to visit my friend in San Francisco for my winter holiday.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced price to stay, within the region of 50-100 dollars? Also any hints on what's good to see?
Thanks a million |

I lived there for a year.
Defintely should see Fishermans Wharf (seals, tourists, restaurants, mimes, musicians, etc.), Baker Beach (nude beach - what the hell, right? and its in the city limits), Castro (hard to avoid - center of the largest gay community in the world), Chinatown (can't miss it - its near everywhere else you want to go, North Beach (Beat culture turned yuppie, but still damn cool area as very Italian mixed with Chinese in that area), Haight-Ashbury (summer of love 67 and the hippies - now mostly drug potsmoker tie-die types whispering to sell hallucinogets of various types, etc.), The Mission (best burritos in SF - heavy hispanic area also turned heavy hipster area for europeans/american artists just out of college or whatever else), Treasure Island (between SF & Oakland - great views of the SF skyline at night), Alcatraz (island prison now tourist attraction - can take ferries from Fishermans Wharf), plus that really large hill in the city - can't remember its name.. but you dive up and up and up and can oversee the entire city, you must also do LOMBARD STREET (world's most crooked street), plus drive along the coast - go past Sunsut/The Richmond some great restaurants overlooking the oceans out there as well as beaches and just beach culture - although its a bit cold in SF year-round to do the swimming in the ocean thing though but still the beach culture and people around - great for beach strolls, Japantown (its not as big as chinatown, but a little distrinct and cool architecure/feeling different than chinatown, ahmmmm.. etc..
WHERE TO STAY.. can't remember the names.. but there is one in NORTH BEACH/CHINATOWN.. hostel for $15/night.. free internet, amazing location, etc.. I think its called THE GREEN TORTOISE. Thats a great area to be in general. Might even have single rooms as well in there.. I just stayed in the hostel part for a few weeks before I got settled in SF. |

I second that. The Green Tortoise is cool. They have some awsome bus tours of nearby sites...The Yosemite one is definitely worth doing, if you have the time. Here's the link http://www.greentortoise.com/san-francisco-hostel/index.php
There's a IYH downtown too, but it's junkier than the Tortoise.
All the sites Tiger mentioned are good. Add - Ghirardelli Square is good if you like chocolate or ice cream. It's the best of both. You can do the wharf and the square in an afternoon of walking. Also, Coit Tower - the tower isn't much to look at and the elevator is sketchy, but the view from the top is amazing. Finally, out past the Sunset/Richmond, at the shore is the Cliff House. It's an old resort, half of which has fallen into the ocean. Nice cliff & GG Bridge views and interesting history. I think you can bus it out there. |

I've stayed at a friend's place there for a month here and there, and I too recommend all of the above. It's a pretty good list.
There's a couple of restaurants in Oakland, yes Oakland, I'd direct you to if you wanna get off the tourist route. And the beach in Alameda is nice to hang out at.
Add to it that valley about 40 minutes south, the one with the windy road down into an incredible wooded valley. I'm from B.C., full of great forests and mountains, but that valley was something special! What's it called again? |

You might be talking about Portola Valley, or maybe Woodside. Just taking Skyline Blvd all the way down from the city will give you a good chance to get lost in the woods ^^.
I have a couple additions to the previous suggestions:
In the city:
Sights
-------
Twin Peaks - famous TV landmark, can see the whole city
Washington Square - "Full House" row aka "The Painted Ladies"
Palace of Fine Arts - basically to take pics with your gf
Richmond District - frickin' HUGE houses on a hill that overlooks the golden gate.
Golden Gate Park - nice park, culture museum, japanese tea garden
Neptune's Cove - seafood restaurant in Fisherman's Wharf, great clam chowder
Consumer
------------
Metreon - Sony World basically, complete with IMAX, arcade, restaurants, etc.
Union Square - Nike Town and other cool places to throw away your money
Out of the City:
Napa Valley - up far north, lots of nice wine tours
Sausalito - up north, sleepy quiet town
Muir Woods - up north, preserved redwood trees
Half Moon Bay - 40 min. south, best fish tacos ever, nice empty beaches
Palo Alto/Mountain View- 45 min. south, Stanford and La Bamba (best burritos)
Oakland - Zachary's Pizza (best Chicago style pizza in SF) ::drool:: |
