I'm trying to figure this out..
Religions of Miami's Dade County:
Fairly clear its 22%.. yet when you look at the demographics of Miami-Dade County:
Pop. 2000 2,253,362
Latino 1,291,737 - 57.32%
White 465,772 - 20.67%
Black 427,140 - 18.96%
Asian & Pacific Islander 31,601- 1.38%
Two or More Races 31,636 - 1.40%
American Indian and Eskimo 1,990 - 0.09%
Other 4,026 - 0.18%
The only thing I can really come up is Miami has become a Jewish-Latino capital as well.. all the Jewish populations that spent years in Argentina, Venezuela, etc. transplanted themselves to Miami and prefer to use the term 'latino' over 'white'?!? Or another theory is they intermarried (such as guys like Slash from G-N-R, Lenny Kravitz, etc.. who are half black/half Jewish).. and use black over white.. or well.. who knows.. and the same with Latino population theory.
Also most latinos are overwhelmingly Catholic.. yet only 40% adheres to Catholicism in Miami-Dade County.. yet 57% Latino? So perhaps.. but THAT many??!!??
Can 22% of Miami be of the Jewish religion!!??!! 1 in 4 or 1 in 5? |

First of all, Miami does not comprise all of Dade County. You seem to be confused about this and it is where you first began to go wrong.
Also, the Jewish "adherents" are more than likely concentrated in the Miami Beach and other "Beach" communities outside of Miami. They are not concentrated in the City of Miami. They started settling and retiring there in significant numbers following WW II. For the most part, they came from the northeast U.S., including NYC. The Latinos (heavily, Cuban) did not start arriving in large numbers until the late 60's, early 70's.
As to why the disparity in the number of Latinos vs. adherence to Catholicism, my guess would be many have converted to Protestantism and others are no longer practicing Catholics.
Finally, out of curiosity, why are you interested in this?
In fact, why am I interested in this? |

I have no idea why I'm interested in either...but Ajarn is correct. I knew a family of Jews in South Florida that came from Cuba in the early 60s--spoke perfect Spanish as well as English.
When I moved from West Texas to South Florida I didn't know what a bagel was. Now I'd give anyting for a jalepeno bagel with cream cheese. |

Actually I used all Dade County statistics.. just easy to use Miami as a title for the thread. But the numbers still remain and the facts remain.
Even if only 40% of Dade County is Catholic.. and 57% Latino.. doesn't mean that many other non-latinos wouldn't be catholic when filling out a census report anyways (people like me).
Also, I believe in NYC anyways.. most Jewish click the 'white' box for the census.. or sometimes the 'other' box.. but the 'other' box is pretty low for Dade County statistically.
Why am I curious? Just interested in Southern Florida.. I think its an interesting region. Very strong mix of various latino groups.. and while I knew Jewish-New Yorkers were attracted to Miami.. didn't realize that it could be as high as 22% of the county practiced Judaism.. particularly when I predominately think of it as a Latino destination capital of the Americas.. |

Does your poll include seasonal residents (AKA snowbirds)? I know tons of people (including extended family members) who own property and spend 6-7 months of the year there (some of them are Jewish). |

It could.. guess it depends on what city they claimed on their census. It can be only one city.. but if coming from Canada as yourself, then it probably would be the city they'd claim.. and they'd be legal residents of Dade County/Miami particularly if they own property. |

I would suggest you ask desultude about this. As I recall she did her thesis on ethnic groups and politics in Miami. |
