What? You say you don't have Onion Day at your school on Monday and have to work all day? Are you in some barbaric province, or what?

Late this afternoon Mr. Lee told me that Monday is Onion Day at our school, and the onion bunny will be bringing presents to all the good little boys and girls....no, I made that up. He says here in the villages it is traditional for schools to give a holiday for the kids to help their parents plant yang-pa. That was a surprise to me.

So I get a 3 day weekend---- again! This will be my 7th week in a row of fewer than 5 days working. I can live with it.

So while you big city folks are consoling yourselves with the thought that you have modern conveniences: like people stepping on your heels everywhere you go, bumping in to you without an apology, and traffic congestion to go with the air and noise pollution, just keep in mind that here in the 'real' Korea, I will be sleeping in on Monday morning and otherwise frittering away my day while you slave away in your urban environment.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy <-- this is me gloating. (Anyone else get Onion Day off?)

No doubt I'll be dwelling on this during one or both of my 10 week vacations.

This island isn't a farming area, just traditional fishers and modern shipbuilding, with some citron hothouses and hot pepper fields hereabouts.

But thanks for the info. It'll be a nice topic of conversation in classes Monday.

I don't get a single weekday off between now and Korean New Year's at the end of January; it's just the way the calendar is this year.
