i think i went to the samsung card page and it immediately installed some activex control on my computer without my consent. it didn't even come with a warning, it just did it.

now i have netpia and all this other consumer crap on my browser if i misspell a URL or something. instead of "this page cannot be displayed" i get some shopping site.

this shit makes me want to set people on fire. i hate spyware. i hate online shopping crap. i'm running spybot and ad-aware right now since after removing the netpia software it's still going to shopping pages.

anyone have a similar problem?

I had to clean some stuff like that off my dad's computer last year. It was a major PITA. They're called browser hijackers, fyi. I don't remember everything I did to get rid of it, but one step was to download a program called 'Hijack This.' You'll need an expert to show you what to do with that program (which I am definitely not) as you can mess up your computer with it if you delete the wrong entries..

On the other hand, you could just switch to Firefox. I use that for 99% of my web-browsing with no problems at all. Much safer than IE.

The absolute best program for this works with a free 1 month trial.

It's called BHR Browswer Hijack Restore. You can get it for free from www.downloads.com

Find it and run it. The first-time start-up wizard is great. Click off of the things that aren't windows-looking, or part of a program you want. Running these programs can be dangerous, but that program does a pretty good job of colorizing the ones that seem dangerous. I always delete all of the "explorer hooks" and BHQ's. I hate toolbars too, because they slow me down, so I zap those too. I also delete ActiveX controls I think look suspicious.

Another thing you may need to do is delete the IE icons on your desktop, and replace them with a copy of the original one from your windows program list. The browswer hijackers often replace the desktop versions of the IE icon with their own that looks the same, but takes you elsewhere.

Another program I recommend installing is Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Personally, I'm more impressed with Adaware SE, but Microsoft's program will automatically block and warn you of any attempts to change your browser home page address (you need to set the page in the program though, it's simple).

Did you try to disable ActiveX use on IE? Go to Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Manage Add Ons. Look for any ActiveX controls that might be doing it and disable them.

Did you fix it?

PC doctor is good too, and even though it says that it's paid I've downloaded it for free from freedownloadscenter.com.

I know what you mean about making you want to set people on fire though. The last time I worked in a normal office-type place the computer I had assigned to me had over 300 things of spyware (!), a toolbar of gayness, and so much else. It took me almost a week to get it all off.
