For the nanowrimo competition (write a 50,000word novel in a month) I am writing a book set in New Zealand after a nuclear holocaust.

The idea is that being such a small and inoffensive country no one nukes it. Although they have to deal with fallout and nuclear winter they emerge the most technologically advanced nation in the world.

Thats the start of my story. The people in it start off in a small village/town on the coast and when they realise what is happening run to the mountains and hide in caves there.

Can neone give me the name of a costal town/village which is in relative proximity to mountains? Smile

Thanks!

Ha ha
NZ may be small, but it's not really inoffensive...
-Refusal to let US nuclear vessels dock on our shores
-Refusal to send troops to the war in Iraq
stepped on quite a few toes.... Laughing

Ashburton or Greymouth, anywhere down the west coast of the South Island, or along the Kapiti coast in the North Island

I'd suggest 'Thames', it was a mining town, plenty of closed down mines in the mountains, it's on the coast and only 2 hours from the largest city which may or may not be relevant/ useful for your story.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I'll choose the mining town, premade caves to shelter helps the story out loads.

Close proximity to a town is also good, they go help out a bunker of govt. people and use that to reclaim Australia in the name of New Zealand Smile

I'm pretty psyched about the story gonna be fun to write. What is the big city Thames next to? What did they mine?

Thanks guys if u fancy a cameo role and dont mind dying I'm more than willing to stick you in.

Strained relations with the US also fits in quite nicely.

They mined gold there. Thames is a small city (town by other countries standards) on the Coromandel peninsular if you want to do some research. It is 2 hours south of Auckland.

(Thames is actually the closest city to my house!!)

Invercargill, cause I hate it. Yah for nuking invercargill!

New plymouth. Greymouth. So many nothing towns.

Bah! I'm from Auckland. The rest of New Zealand doesn't exist. Just as an interesting aside, Auckland is full of underground tunnels built for various invasions that didn't come. Might fit better with your story.

Tee hee, I think its actually quite feasible if a nuclear war happened (overlooking issues of nuclear winter) depends on the wind for the fallout, west you'd be ok, east u'd be toast.

As for the title, I'm thinking "New New Zealand" Smile
