I read about Bush doing a stint with Habitat for Humanity a few days ago, and I thought it was a joke - I mean, it's an organization most identified with Jimmy Carter, after all, and the whole thing about picking up a hammer for a photo op either means the man is desperate for publicity or so far into the lame-duck mode that no one is going to blink and ask if real shouldn't spending the time kicking the right kind of butt to make sure the govt does what it's paid to do - um, wait, just remembered, the rightwing doesn't think it's the govts job to help people ... unless you wrote a check to get them their job, of course.

Whole thing is so dumb I'd never talk about except Dave Letterman made it into a segment last night ... he made some well-chosen cracks about the photos in the news : "Obviously, the man's never held a hammer in his life - don't choke the neck like that, hold it down further like this" (demonstrating with a pencil.)

The came the Top Ten List.

Quote:
Top Ten Thoughts Going Through George W. Bush's Mind At This Moment

10. "This should make up for me waiting a week to respond to the hurricane"

9. "Dang, this is fun--I should bring a hammer to cabinet meetings"

8. "Why won't they let me handle the power tools?"

7. "Great, another thing I'm not good at"

6. "This is the kind of thing we should be paying Halliburton 800 bucks an hour to do"

5. "Do I get to keep the hard hat?"

4. "It's Hammer Time!"

3. "I've got to finish pretending to build a house so I can go pretend to comfort people"

2. "Georgie's gonna need another five weeks off"

1. "Only thing Clinton ever nailed was that hefty intern"

I laughed out loud at Numbers 6. 3, and 1.

I've always liked the (I think) Yiddish term, zaftig ... somehow it sounds a little better than "hefty."

I guess it's going to be history in the making here as I'm going to dissagree with the Bobster on this one.

Yes, Bush is a moron, asshole, impostore and an imbecile squatter in the White House. And though it is a B.S. photo op, etc. I do believe in what Carter is doing and am happy to see Habitat for Humanity getting some well earned publicity. They've been doing outstanding work and are one group that stand out in America.

The reality is, people see through Bush. His family are warmongers who are drilling, funding and controlling oil. They are corrupt rulers that need to be overthrown ASAP.

I guess we mostly agree, but on the Habs, we do dissagree.

Cheers my friend.

We don't really disagree, and I massively groove on what H4H is all about. I might sort of resent that the rightwing is using it as an example of a "faith-based" organization - it calls itself Christian but it is non-denominational - butu moreso I take issue with them being used as a photo-op to show people (ludicrously) that Bush cares about average people.

If they gain by it, so much the better, because they do great thing for real peolple, but frankly, in the context of the larger tragedy, Bush's grandstanding is just more absurd posturing. Dave made that more abundantly clear than I could ...

And, f course, the larger message in all this is that the govt has no job to do when the people who created it are in need ... so best look to charitably-minded folks like this instead of the people who built that govt - unless, as I said, you are one of the people who wrote big checks to GOP or some "soft money" group that supports Bush.

Bobster. Point well taken. I think H4H are more of a left-wing faith based group. Maybe we mostly agree afterall. Yes, the grandstanding sucks, but to me, the end is worth it. And yes, the gov. needs to take responsibility in helping the people get back on their feet.

All the best!

But she has made lexical history of her own, I've heard. Someone said that in certain districts in Seoul, the working girls ask their customers if they would like a "Lewinsky." (That's not a flavor at Baskin Robbins.)

Yes Carter, aside from Kennedy he's long been the only recent President i've had even a shred of respect for amongst that bunch. And this was even before he took a few moments to send little ol' me a personal email a few years back as well. From what others who know him have told me, it's just the way he is Wink

Does anyone honestly think we'll see G.W. putting in time with groups like HFH after his term presumably expires? Likely no more than what it takes for his handlers to snap the few obligatory publicity photos.

Agreed. Most ex-presidents play a lot of golf, ride their horse a bit, and not a lot more besides getting their library in order. Jimmy picked up a hammer and encouraged others to do the same ...

Clinton's been doing good struff, too, I notice.
