hi everyone...
i just have a few questions...
i'm just wrapping up my undergrad from the university of toronto and would like to pursue a career in medicine afterwards. i would like to spend my upcoming summer months (may-august) in korea teaching english.
having done some research it looks like most schools require a minimum 1 year contract. i have read some posting on this forum saying that six-month contracts are available (but are rare especially in korea). are there contracts that last only for 4 months? or could i go without signing a contract?
in addition, i am not nor do i intend to become certified in tefl/tesol or celta.
any suggestions?
thanks! |

Find a teacher who works at a small hagwon who wishes to stay at the same place but really wants an extended vacation but can't because the director would have a hard time finding a replacement.
Last year or the year before I personally would have jumped at the chance to offer you my hagwon position for the summer, as I go off travelling for the summer with plans of returning to the same one-expat academy after the summer is over. I'm even tempted to do that next summer, though part of me wishes to move on, since I will have been at the same place for over three and a half years by then.
So, volunteer to be an extended substitute teacher for a Korean ESLer at a small hagwon. If you have no intentions of returning to Korea within the following year, then the director simply signs you to a standard one-year contract that neither you nor he expects to be completed. Win-win-win all around. |

I loved the advice on that last post. What nonsense. How is he going to simply find a Bangkok bound charachter who works for a small Hogwon who wants to take a 4 month vacation?

Actually, I am in a position for exactly that. I need a 3 month substitute for my small, absolutely perfect for me hagwan. I don't want to give up the job and the director doesn't want me to quit, but neither of us can see a way around the fact that I have to go home to help out with some family stuff for a few months.
Unfortunately for the OP, it can't wait until next May . . . it's gotta be soon.
But, I would reckon that it could be done quite easily... |

Exactly. I have sat around drinking beers with two other teachers working at small local hagwons who have expressed similar sentiments. When one gets a good work situation in Korea one is often hesitant to simply work somewhere else after finishing a contract (the typical take a break between jobs).
I personally have no interest in Thailand or other nearby place for a long vacation. Like plattwaz I wanted to spend a few months (especially summer!) back home, and next summer I'm interested in travelling through Europe.
(If I decide I want to return to the same place I've been since 2002 I'll PM the op. But I'm not making my decision until at least January, and maybe not until as late as April or May. Maybe we might work something out. Geoje Island is only 45 minutes by ferry from the Nampodong neighbourhood of Busan, a quick zip.)
Alternatively, the op could do a summer camp or two, though that may pay less than four full months pay (but might include airfare, and would be a good experience regardless). |

I will be finishing my contract in May next year and am wanting to re-sign (at this stage). I will be asking for 6 weeks break.... if you're interested? Will still give you enough time to sign up for a summer camp afterwards as well. |

Don't forget about the possibility of a summer English camp. |

when are summer English camps generally?
a "korean" summer (in terms of dates) doesn't necessarily correspond with a "north american" summer does it? |

This year, Summer vacation whre I live was from around July 20 to August 20 (not exact dates but approximate). Summer camps usually take 3 of the 4 weeks. |

Not as in California or Florida, no.
But at 37 degrees latitude north, it's pretty equal to a Nebraskan summer, though a bit longer, mid-June to end of September. Starts a bit late compared to my hometown, since the rainy weeks in early June from the Indian Monsoons cools things down more hereabouts.
Summer camps are in July and August, the heart of the summer at this latitude. |
