I need a little advice regarding documentation.

I just got offered a job but they say they want my original degree certificate and sealed transcripts. Is this a requirement as I was under the impression a certified copy would be fine?

Thing is in the U.K we dont really do sealed transcripts we just get our results on a crappy bit of paper. I am not even sure if the uni issues another set sealed or not, and if they do its likely to take ages to sort out.

I was also looking at some other posts, which referred to some specific kind of seal; what they want like a wax seal from the Queen or something?

Get your registrar to put the transcripts in one of their envelopes and sign over the seal, or envelope flap.

Search for relevant threads, Tin-Tin. There are some.

Your uni will definitely give you transcripts at your request. It happens all the time. Sealed simply means 'unopened' I think with the official university 'seal' on. Get uni to post you transcripts - it'll have the postage mark 'Manchester Uni' or what ever - and don't open them. Send the unopened envelope with everything else. It's a pain in the ar5e, but not too awful.

While we're on it, why do the insist that they be sealed ans signed. Are they not aware that if we went to the trouble of making fake transcripts, we'd probably fake a signature too?

Hi, I am a UK graduate

I got the administrator to print out all my exam results from each year at uni on to university headed paper.
He then put them in an envelope and stamped them with the university stamp on the front and on the back where the envelope is sealed.
Immigration accepted them no problem.

Ok thanks for the help with the transcripts I'll call my uni today and ask them to sort me something out.

What about my degree cert though? Do I have to post my only original as the schools claiming?

I am going to get slated for this, but I actually sent my original diploma over and had no problems. But, you can easily get it notarised and send a copy. It is up to you.

You don't have to send over your original!

Tin Tin,

If the worst comes to the worst and you send your original degree cert to Korea and it goes missing for what ever reason, you simply get a replacement from Uni. My cert was lost in an application to a Hakwon (in hindsight, thank goodness!) and I simply told Uni the situation and they sent me a new one within a week. So don't be too anxious about that.

The notarized copy alternative is there too, as someone's said. That involves taking your cert to the Korean Embassy (Buckinghamgate, London SW, right near Buckingham Palace...in case you don't know already) and getting a notorzied copy. That's fine too.

Also, in case you don't know this too, use Fedex or DHL - preferably the former. Don't use the Post Office.

I was under the same impression because my results also came on a crappy piece of paper but instead of dealing with the graduation office directly, I checked the alumni page of my Uni in the U.K. and they had a form for ordering sealed and stamped transcripts - a bit dear at 10 pounds, but they do it nonetheless. Might want to try that.

I also looked at my uni homepage and saw that they charged 25 ounds for transcripts, but I went direct to my school office and they didn't charge me a thing.

Well I think that depends on your university. I thought I lost my degree and asked my university (Edinburgh) for a new one. They told me they didn't issue replacements but would issue a letter saying I graduated.. I dunno if that would cut it with immigration here. It turned out I hadn't lost my certificate though so it was ok.

That's an interesting point, because I called my uni before I came here and asked about getting a copy of my degree. They said that because it was a legal document I couldn't have a copy or a replacement.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, Edinburgh are clearly real wa_kers.

Your Uni degree cert is your property and if you lose it, you're entitled to a replacement. If you identify yourself sufficiently to the University - and they'll still have your pic and details on the system - there's no reason other than sheer awkwardness for sheer awkwardness's own sake to deny you a replacement.
