Hey everyone...
First time posting here, and I am very sad that I have to do so. I just checked with the airlines that I am flying home on, and because of the route that I will be taking (three different airlines), I think it will cost me almost $500 to take my little cat home with me. I tried so hard to make sure that I would not have to leave him in Korea, but I don't think it's possible for me to take him home.
Does anyone know how it works when you are taking dfferent airlines? Do you just pay the fee for taking a pet on board once? or do you have to pay all three airlines separately?
And if so... ... Would anyone like my darling little guy? His name is Galbi, he's 9 months, old, Russian Blue (purebred), all of his shots are done and he's fixed. I am heartbroken over this. I can't believe I might have to leave him here.
Thanks for any help you can give...
.

| Maybe you should have checked into this before you decided to become a pet owner in a nation on the other side of the world where you're only going to be living a year or two. Damn selfish of you. Seems like this cat has a meeting with the vet needle. I hate people like you that can't live a bloody year without a pet and the pet ends up having to pay with its life because of your own short sighted selfishness. |

The op is obviously upset about this and you kick him/her in the slats just to make sure that he/she really feels bad. Hope that makes you feel better because people like you don't have much to look forward to do you? |

Ignore MM2, what country are you going to? That is the big question.
Next, 500 is NOT THAT MUCH. Pay it. This is the kinda shit that you will regret later, and a purebred russian blue would cost more than that.
Bring Galbi home. |

The op did try, How about the way MOST cats get treated in korea
kicked in the butt...down at the market its discusting how they keep them, with their tails tied up with rope and elastic bands etc.....At least Catherine tried . Animals are not humans...I have had dogs...grown really close to them and love them to bits....but we as humans still have to live our lives and you never know what is around the corner for a pet keeper, you cant just say....oh i have a cat i cant go home i must stay in korea for the rest of my life...
I agree what your saying about animal cruelty but that is agoing a bit far[/quote] |

Are you kidding? The op gave a lot of loving to a cat who wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.
I don't like the idea of lifetime commitment or nothing. Plenty of animals need loving NOW. Even six months is better than nothing.
Just do the responsible thing like the op is doing and find a caring home for the animal when you have to leave.
Kuddos to the op. Find a good home for the kitty.
If susy is willing to take it, I might be able to arrange delivery (transfering by car).
I encourage anybody who is going to spend a year in Korea to go to an animal shelter and give a kitty or puppy or adult animal a good home for a year or two. They need it and won't likely get it otherwise. Then find them a nice home afterwards, passing the animal onto another person. Nobody should "own" an animal anyways. We are all caretakers at best. Let's take of them individually, sequentially, whatever. |

Just as parents are caretakers of children, but should they be shifted around every year or two? Some animals might be able to handle it, but most don't.
That said, sometimes we have to give an animal away due to circumstances beyond our control. I hope the OP will be able to take her little one home, but if not, please try to find a permanent home for him. |

| As another poster said, it shouldn't cost you near 500. I brought a cat home and it only cost a little over 200, and I think the original schedule was going through at least three different airlines...I got two tickets, one for each of us, all the way home. Unfortunately(fortunately) we missed the flight because of the quarantine issue and we were able to get a direct flight from Kimp'o to TO and stayed over night there before getting the last leg home. Granted, I had to shell out an additional 200 for the stupid Airport Hilton or wherever the hell it was, but it ended up being much better for both the cat and I than having to fly from Kimp'o to Tokyo to JFK to La Guardia to Montreal to home. At least that's how I remember it...it was a long time ago. Anyway, you should be able to book two tickets through your agent(unless you're planning on having a week lay-over in some exotic destination or two or something). It at least seems like you're trying to do what's in the best interest of the cat, regardless of what others have said. |

Wow... after that first post, I wanted to cry all over again, but it seems that not everyone is in the same frame of mind - that I am selfish and cruel and deserve to be dragged into the streets by my toenails and peed on by a drunk ajoshi.
Thanks for the advice/comments. I am checking further into it, and think that I might be able to bring him home for less than I thought. And in posting, I sorta jumped the gum a little - I was talking to another friend of mine who is in the Air Force over here, and he is going home shortly after me - he said that he would get him shipped for me, if it comes right down to it, and that I could pick him up in the states.
Anyway, once again, thanks. And I will try to not take mean comments to heart. You try so hard, and when it all falls through, you get kicked. Not nice. People should be more thoughtful of the feelings of others. I would never leave my cat in a position where he was going to be put down. You have no faith in people, MM2 |

It is a one time fee. I am sure. I've been there, done that. And in fact, in Korea I didnt' have to pay (but I did on our way back from the US). Well traveled cat, that one! Wish he was still with me.
Mindmeto, that was the rudest I've ever seen you be on this board. |

Although, Mindmeto was a bit harsh. I do agree in part with what he/she said. If the cat is loved that much money should be no object.
As a cat lover with three cats at home in the UK who I miss very much, the thought of yet another cat being left behind when another English teacher goes home makes me very sad. |

$500 is not a lot at all - especially if you love this cat as much as you say you do. My uncle wanted to take his dog to Aussie (only a 4 hour plane trip) and it was going to cost $1500.... needless to say they were leaving a lot of debts behind without having to add to more.
Will you be transferring flights? If so, it will be a one off payment. If you are not officially transferring and you have to pick up your bags at each stop then I imagine you will have to pay more than once. |
