I'm thinking about asking my school to let me go to this, I know Jeju teachers get well reimbursed for it, so being in Incheon it'd cost a pittance for them to hook me up.
Before I ask I am curious as to what will be covered on the course? Is it worth going? (These people are not keen to give me a lousy pinboard for my classroom) I'll need to justify its usage.

My friend just went to Daejon this past weekend, and he said the conference was amazing. He's got a degree in linguistics (plus 7 yrs. teaching experience), and he got a lot out of the conference. I don't think he spent much money, cuz I doubt he would've went if it was pricey. |

Its not a course, its a conference. Means there will be lots of lectures, presentations, & workshops going on simultaneously for 2 days. Some, assuredly, more valuable than others.
Your admission (55000 won I think for nonmembers at the door) gets you a thick guidebook. Easy enough to put together a schedule of what looks promising & relevant to you.
Also lots of publishers booths with all their latest teaching materials on display. If you work that angle there are discounts, draws, & free samples to be had.
I'm not sure what youre looking for from your boss. Its saturday/sunday so I doubt you need time off. I guess you could make a pitch for the admission cost.
I went last year & thought it worthwhile. |

I"ve gone 3 years running and have enjoyed it. The key is to plan which presentations you are going to attend in advance. Also, if you are looking to learn something useful avoid the commercial presentations.
I only go to commercial presentations when nothing else catches my eye and then only if it's a book that I might use as they usually give samples at the end of the presentation.
Hope you enjoy it. |

Hey we can get a big discount if we can get a group of at least 5 together. |

Well I'm going, regardless of whether my school will pay the admission or not. CLG I'm guessing if we hit the 5 ur coming. What is the reduction in cost? |

I really wanted to go, but the national storytelling contest is on that Saturday and I have to be there to cheer on my kids. |

AH.. I was going to post something about this.
I am on the Conference Committee.
Anyway...
Here is a link to the website: www.kotesol.org/conference/2005
CLG is right - a group of 5 is cheaper but you MUST pre-register, which officially ended last week (but we are keeping it open unofficially for a few days more, so if you are interested in pre-registering and saving some won, then do it now!!).
It's really worth going this year, as we have 11 invited speakers and a lot of presentations. Also we are putting together a really wonderful goody bag that includes a thermal mug!
Another thing I want to tell you is this:
If you are a current KOTESOL member (for at least 12 months) and are bring new people (2 or more) to the conference who sign up as members (pre-reg. or onsite reg.), you can enter our prize draw. Prizes include a laptop/notebook computer, free kotesol memberships (2 years membership, worth 75,000 won), reimbursement of Conference admission, outback steak out full course dinner coupons, optical wheel mouse etc...
It's simple to enter.. you just need to be a KOTESOL member of 12 months, bring 2 or more new people who have never been a KOTESOL member, get them to sign up as members and attend the conferece. When you are at the conference, go to the membership desk and have your and your friends' status verfied and you are in the competition. The more you bring, the more chances you have - 2 for 1 chance, 4 for 2 chances etc.
Your friends, new KOTESOL members, also get to enter the prize draw for a chance to win back their conference fee! So it's a win-win situation for everyone and it's fun!
I hope many of you will come because I did the proofreading of the abstracts and there are some really interesting stuff - especially on young learners.
If you need more information, let me know and I will try and answer your questions for you!!!

Tzechuk,
Do you know when the conference information is going to be updated on the website? I wasn't too happy pre-registering when I didn't know if the topics covering were up my alley or not...
Actually the whole site is looking pretty shabby right now IMO...
oh, and I emailed "Stephen Bew" about confirming my membership - on two different webpages there were two different email addresses for him - so I emailed him and got NO REPLY from him!! So, how is one supposed to confirm membership?
(I see JackTheCat has also said in another post that his emails to Kotesol have disappeared into oblivion...) |

I have been going to KOTESOL every year - I always find something interesting that I can use in my classroom from the very next day. |

Could someone tell me what time it starts? I can't seem to find the starting and closing times on the website.
Thanks

I usually go to a couple of sessions with topics that I know little about. It may even be a topic that I have little interest in. This forces me to learn something new, which of course makes my weekend that much more worthwhile. |
