Au contrair mon seur, there is a new line being constructed that goes right by our place in Hongdae, all the way out to the airport. Heaven knows when it'll be up and running. The station is going to be right accross the street~ kitty corner from our place. Most awesome!! |

Ah, okay I figured it out. 25 minutes from Gimpo to Incheon during the first stage, 50 minutes from Seoul Station after that's completed. |

I've done a bit of checking and not come up with anything useful. Everything I found said that it will be finished 'by 2005' to Gimpo and then to Seoul Station 'by 2008' so actually, who knows? Line 9 is supposed to be finished by 2007 according to my map but I doubt they can get that ready in time. |

yeah everything I've read said construction for the first stage (incheon to gimpo) was supposed to be finished by 2005, yet last time I was out at the airport (June) it didn't look close to being finsihed. Line 9 on the other hand looks like it's powering through. Noryangjin has been all pulled up. |

Funny that the Chinese managed to pull off the one the greatest engineering feats in human history and build a 1,200km long rail line across the Himalaya mountains to Lhasa, Tibet in less than half the time it's taking to build a light rail line from Incheon airport to downtown Seoul.
However, the Chinese workers aren't unionised.

it doesn't take much more than 50 minutes to Seoul Station on the bus either.
Of course you know what they should have done

Depends on traffic. Going from eastern Seoul it's take anywhere from 2-3 hours. |

I was just out that way today, seeing my parents off at Incheon airport. The line from Gimpo to Incheon airport is fairly well into development - still quite a bit to be done though - and appears could be open by as soon as early next year. But, that's just my guesstimate. |

If you look carefully, you will see that although some sections are well advanced (catenary masts installed for example) there are sections where the civil works are incomplete. Track is down in some places but final alignment is a long way off yet. The catenary cables have to be installed as do all the power sub-stations (there is one near the bridge). And the stations, necessary not just for passengers, but also for the technical rooms they include which are necessary for the static and later dynamic testing. Expect to see trains running for 6-9 months in testing and later commissioning before it is open.
My guess is late 2007 early 2008.
To the poster in praise of Mao's mob, to build a simple railway for locomotive hauled trains through an unpopoulated area with forced labour in record time is not too hard: simply omit a few details like double track, signalling and 9 months testing and commissioning, et voila!! |
