Flying into or out of wellington in New Zealand sucks. It's always bumpy and there is no room for error. Once we were taking off we experienced windsheer and dropped so fast the overhead bins opened. Yikes. |

Flying from Hawaii to Auckland.... the turbulence lasted about an hour or so..... we had heaps of little drops, several decent ones and one really really big one. It was 2 years before my mum could get on an airplane again (and even then she had to be high as a kite). of course I was just a kid so it was pretty exciting for me!
Although my worst experience was coming to Korea... the plane was chocka with Koreans who were pretty noisy (on an overnight flight) and eating some disgusting smelling red vegetable stuff and farting all the time... not to mention the air hostesses weren't exactly very firendly to me - yes my bag was heavy but it was still within the limitations outlined by the airline! Not to mention the movies were crap and it was difficult to sleep.... I vowed never to use Korean Air again, but Im leaving soon and they are a direct flight and are the cheapest.... |

I thought Korean Air was the most expensive flying to and from NZ/Korea! Well it was when I looked at prices to come back to Korea after summer.
I used to think I preferred flying direct, but with the issue of Deep Vein Thrombosis and if I thought about airline service/reputation vs. price vs. time, I'm more likely to shop explore more options.
So even though my contract says take 'the most direct flight,' I'll be taking Singapore Airlines home - great service, comfort (fat pillows!); airpoints, etc; and they let you away with more luggage.
My worst flight was Singapore-Narita on North West, I think.
My aisle seat was in the middle block right in front of the movie screen/wall, which is where they usually place parents with babies. Well, my seat was on the right, and my immediate neighbour was a very large woman whose body spread over the arm rest and onto my seat.
I guess I'm 'small' in stature, so her taking up a third of my seat, and the fact that I couldn't put my feet up on anything (damn those short legs!) made for an uncomfortable trip. Oh, and she and her husband had a grizzling toddler as well.
Now I make sure I request a window seat....
Oh, I forgot - the other worst flight was Buenos Aires-Auckland. I don't know about now, but then, they still allowed smoking on flights. My friend and I didn't sleep a wink of the looong flight because the leg space was so small, and the whole plane was filled with cigarette smoke the whole way.

Never had a real nightmare trip. Other than on biz trips being crammed into the center seat and having fat drunk people ooze into your seat. I always made sure I bought a good stiff thick newspaper and jammed it between me and the arm rest. This way the drunk fatty next to me can't ooze over the arm rest into my seat. |

My worst aeroplane experiences were my two crash landings.
First time, we were coming into to land at Manaus in Amazonia and ran into a flock of birds. A couple of the buggers got sucked into the port side engine which promptly blew up and started the wing burning. The pilot landed the plane right then and there and we all bailed out and watched the plane burn to the ground.
The second time, I was flying from Osaka to Manila and the plane run into bad weather, lightning and very severe turblence, which shorted out the plane's avionics, radio, and caused the engines to malfunction. Some how the pilot managed to make to Taipei where we crash landed at the airport there. |

My worst experience -- an older Korean man had a minor stroke flying over the Pacific -- 9 hours away from any place to land. His wife, a very typical ajumma, was in hysteric mode and screaming running up and down the aisles, hitting the flight attendants, refusing to let anyone near her husband to help (including the one doctor they located in first class). She was throwing a fit, ripping the oxygen mask off of her husband, and the flight attendants (both women who were in their 50s and more than willing to put their foot down sternly) were trying to be stern towards her but at the same time, do the job they had to do.
When they manged to secure the area around him (by making a "human circle" of flight attendants) and keep her outside of it, she went absolutely nutso screaming and wailing and carrying on. Every Korean passenger on the plane tried their hardest to crowd around and gawk and stare at the whole ordeal, and jsut my luck that it was happening in the row in front of me. No one else seemed to notice that I was sitting in the chair as they tried to climb over me, or push me out of the chair so they could get a better view of what was happening...for no other reason than to be nosey.
Her husband was fine after a few hours, able to sit up and eat and what not, but the wife still refused to let the doctor near him. |

I am doing a quick flight from Colorado Springs to Denver. We are landing in Denver and as usual I have a window seat right on the wing. As soon as we touch down the cover to the engine suddenly flips back. I swore it was breaking apart and I screamed like a five year old girl.
Needless to say I am still here and all it was doing was helping provide back thrust for breaking.... |

From Luang Prabang to Vientienne Laos. It was on Lao Aviation in an old Russian prop plane. My brother and I and a bunch of European tourists. Smoke started entering the cabin, and we all looked at each other nervously. I looked over at the waitresses and they looked business as usual, so i calmed down. It was some kind of oxygen that was supposed to enter the cabin but i guess since it was Lao Aviation we all thought the worst. |

We were flying from Manchester to somewhere in Florida, and were told the plane wasn't safe to fly.
The passengers who had already flown in it up from Heathrow weren't very happy at all.
Then there's the time I fell asleep whilst we were still on the tarmac at Helsinki and didn't wake up until we touched down at Heathrow. Aah, (lack of) memories. |

Those are the very best flights of all! I've never had a big hairy fear of flying, but once I managed (trying subconsciously?) to fall asleep before lift-off and awaken just in time to hear the captain tell us to fasten our seatbelts for landing. I slept straight through two meals and the inflight movies. It was the best flight ever! Now I consciously try to repeat it every time I fly. Again, I'm not afraid of flying. I just consider it an infernal waste of my time. |

My stories pale in comparison to Jack the Cat's but...
Story #1 - Flying to Toronto from Vancouver we had a stopover in Calgary... As we're preparing to land in Calgary the plane is struck by lightning and all of the power goes out... women and grown men alike were freaking out.. the girl I was with started pouring out her heart to me about how she's loved me for a long time, etc.. etc.. (she was dating one of my friend's at the time and we had gone to Whistler to visit one of our mutual friends for a week).. the blackout and total silence from the plane itself (I swear we were just gliding) lasted for the good part of two minutes.. then the lights went back on and the engines powered up again before we circled the airport again before landing... the girl blushed and was embarassed.. she truly believed she was going to die.. she broke up with her boyfriend a week later, but that's a different story...
Story #2 - HoChiMinh to Danang
Typical small plane.. flight is going smoothly until we touch down.. more than one of us notice that we're running out of runway quickly.. next thing you know the plane slams into this dirt mound at the end of the runway and we spinout doing two full circles.. plane stops, everyone stares at each other wide-eyed.. stewardesses tell us everything is fine and we leave the plane like nothing happened... didn't really sink in as to what happened until I had a few beers later that night.. |

Being able to sleep on a plane is a gift. A gift. |
