I've met a Korean girl, met her about two years ago, and I want to ask her to marry me. So, tell me, what is typical/expected? I think that the engagement ring is not quite as big a deal in Korea as it is in the US, but I don't know for sure. Should it be a diamond? big? gold band? something else? should it be expensive? We are just a simple couple, nothing pretentious. Can anybody give me a little help here?

Thanks

I'd like to give you a big whole bag of something to help you along with your initiative and creativity. Can we meet? PM me. No, don't.

Just ask her. Worked for me.

As she's dating a foreigner she will be expecting you to do it western style. Diamond ring, romantic location and sweaty palms.

so, it was a diamond ring? or just some sort of other ring?
You're right, though, I think she's ready, I need to ask her before she asks me. She's planning on moving here (US), anybody have any advice with that?

The engagement ring I bought was very simple, some gold but no diamonds. I compensated by letting her choose her wedding ring. Not sure if all K-girls are this way, but she didn't care much for diamonds anyway. Cool

Yeah: Have fun.

You might PM PolyChronic Time Girl. She had - or has had, is having - a helluva fun time getting her husband over there. I'm facing the same issue with my fiance - although not so immediately - and I'm already dreading the process.

But remember: in Korea, you don't go down on one knee; instead, you go down on both and then kowtow until your forehead touches the floor.

Now, if anyone comes across a foreigner in a fancy restaurant or scenic lookout on the ground with his ass sticking up in the air, please take a picture for me.

I know of a guy who proposed to his Korean girlfriend after nearly 2 years, and she looked shocked, then informed him that she has had a Korean boyfriend for the past year, and was considering marrying him, because the parents wouldn't approve of a waygook.

She said, 'Marrying a foreigner never entered my mind, but can I still see you?'

Good luck.

I proposed in a taxi after a night on the town. Totally UNromantic,
but we had been discussing marriage for a long time. No engagement
ring, but we had 'couple rings' for a long time, too. We got awesome
wedding rings, though. Both platinum. In fact, her friend is a master jeweler
and I'm sure he got us a nice deal. PM if you want his contact info.

PS: I'd not recommend proposing in a taxi. I still muse over how I could
have done it nicer..

I got down on my knees and offered her my life and a plastic ring from a 2L Coke. She accepted. She's still got that Coke top. Keeps it next to her diamond ring (which she never wears).
