Considering pursuing positions in Korea.

How's it look for a single guy? I don't ask to be rude (one night stands), but more looking for the dating scene. What's it like? I'm an in-shape American (greek/italian descent) in my early 30's. I'm sure it's all location dependent, but still looking for some insight.

There was a thread about that here. But I don't think you'll learn much from it. Dave's general take on the subject is you will get plenty of action in big cities if you are presentable but not much out in the sticks unless you speak the language.

If you can speak Korean, you'll get average-decent looking women.

If you can't, then you're stuck with the scraps.

datings a game - you have to play it by the rules.

learn some korean - people are always impressed when you can show you are interested in their culture/making an effort. PLus its tiring for them speaking english all the time.

Dress! koreans as a rule are presentable/trendy people.

I hate to say this but - dont be showy, but dont be cheap with korean girls - they seem to like rich/smart or a combination of both. Id maybe drop a hint that your doing ok with the cash at some point in the date...

Dont be too dry - korean girls are often fickle (please feel free to correct me on that opinion) and like to have fun not talk about politics etc all night.

hope that helps but thoses rules did me quite well while i was dating until I met my other half.

but most of all

GOOD LUCK!

Razz

No. A few people seem to think language ability is crucial. Fact is, most Koreans don't give a rats two-hole if you can/can't speak Korean. Maybe a few chicks might be turned on by your ability to speak it, and I'd certainly recommend learning some for your own benefit, but it's far, far from necessary for getting tail. The chicks that just want to practice English (in other words, the vast majority) aren't gonna want to sit around listening to you blabber on and on hacking up the language at Coffee Bean. I know it sounds cynical, but the sooner you realize this the better.

If you're looking for a long-term relationship with a Korean, though, that's a different story, in which advanced language ability will not only be appreciated, but probably required. If you're just here for a year or two, though, don't waste your time sitting around with textbooks--you'd be much better off hittin' the hofs.

Dated a few western females since I've been here and that is so wide of the mark it's not true (of course, if all you are interested in is dating Korean females then this may well may be true).

I know about twenty foreigners here who are married to Korean women and not one of them can have a proper conversation in Korean

Haha, well, then I guess Korean is even more worthless than I thought. At any rate, the moral of the story is that learning Korean can't hurt you, but it's far, far from necessary, as this poster and others have suggested.

your sort of right out the language thing - and I agree to a point. The thing is though, if youre dating - it really opens up a lot more possibilities as not everyone can speak English.
If not, youre restricted to dating girls that can speak English and that cuts down the catch considerably.
If you can meet english speakers though, id definately agree, its not that important - but it does show that youre at least interested in thier culture i think. I if I was at home and met a polish girl (for example) who had made no effort to learn english and come to my country to work, - i wouldnt be too impressed
