I used to struggle with writer's block, until I realised the problem was all in my head. This was a great relief to me, until I realised further that it meant I was a blockhead. But at least I got square on that.

It's a question of priority and perseverance.

Set aside time and stick to it.

I write from 8-11 am Monday to Friday. No exceptions. I manage my life around these three hours. They are as fixed as my work schedule, indeed, they are my work schedule, because writing is working, as I'm made aware during those tough days when writing is more process than product. Teaching is my other job.

If you're serious about writing and really want to put something out, perhaps you should schedule a retreat for yourself for that very purpose. Go to Thailand alone for a couple weeks or something like that. I know it sounds crazy but you could explain your situation to your lady and ask her if you guys could not see each other for a week. During that time you can be focused and make sure that you take advantage of the extra time to write. You have to make room in your life for writing when you're busy. But the reality is that a writer has to write and will write no matter what. That's who he is.

I live in Northern Seoul my GF down in Anyang. I work at night. I don't do privates. I have plenty of time. I go to Starbucks every morning, drink coffee, and write. Sometimes the best way to motivate yourself to write is take on another project you want to avoid doing.

I attempt to write every day. Because I work from 3 - 11pm, there's usually enough time for me to get some writing done. I'm pretty diligent about it, although my creative output is too slow for a 3-hour session like one of the previous posters mentioned to be feasible. I'm also focused on maintaining my exercise routine, and there are also household chores and errands to take care of. And sometimes the creative juices simply aren't flowing. Writing isn't easy to begin with, and I refuse to create an extra layer of anxiety around it. Each writer has to find his or her own pace, basically.

For what it's worth, I just sold my third book (a novel) and the publisher indicated he would be interested in seeing my fourth (a short fiction collection).

Sounds like you're quite conscious of what you write. Do you have an internal censor/critic judging your work harshly?

I had the most AWFUL fiction writing teacher at univeristy. I've met so many people who graduated from his class and have not written a word of fiction since. That was over 10 years ago. I was one of them... for years I couldn't get his voice and criticisms out of my head Twisted Evil Then I found out that a bookcase fell on him and broke his leg... there is justice afterall Very Happy

Anyway, I digress...

The secret to writing (and it's not really a secret at all) is to just write.

Waiting for inspiration to strike or for that opportunity to "get in the zone" means that you will rarely, if ever write. Don't wait. Just write.
I used to spend so much time procrastinating and waiting for inspiration... what a waste of time! But now I actually found that by writing stuff down, any old stuff, unleashes the creative flow. Doesn't matter if it isn't quality - you can work on that later. I hate a blank page as much as the next person but I quickly fill it with thoughts and ideas, which then create more thoughts and ideas, then I work back over it and try to salvage any gold and throw the rest away.

It's just getting into the habit of writing, too. They say it takes 21 days to create a new habit. Start writing more often and stick to it.

If you can get your hands on a copy of "The Artists Way" by Julia Cameron, I highly recommend it. The two great lessons I got out of "doing" that book was that I can (and still do) write every day and don't worry about trying to think things up - just get them down. I loved it. Lots of fun activities in there. I still write my "Morning Pages" and find that they keep me sane. I get anxious and cranky if I don't do them!

(BTW - Morning Pages are just three freehand writing on any old crap for about 30 mins, first thing in the morning. It's like a journal.)

I write for a living now - it's freelance, non-fiction web content/articles, but it's writing work and it pays really well Smile I really enjoy it, too. I have deadlines to meet and word targets to reach. When you write your way into a job, it's a great feeling and it gets to be so easy and you just churn churn churn good stuff out.

I have plenty of "down time" these days between gigs and I do lots of creative projects all the time.

Really looking forward to some crazy stuff coming out of my brain in Nov for Nanowrimo (you should join us!) - with one week to go I've dropped my planned story and on a whim have decided to pursue something else. Nothing but a hunch to go on... Razz

The reason I started my blog was because I have very little time to write but needed an outlet for when I do. Of course I could write here, but Dave doesn't like it when I use the F-word. And I use the F-word quite a bit.
