Our school is sending a new techer to Japan to get her visa. They have not given her a 'blue paper' (Confirmation of Visa Issuance). Instead, they told her that e new policy (last two months) is in effect for Canadians and Americans. They only have to present a 'visa number' (some kind of confirmation number, I guess) to get the visa. The 'visa number' is issued by Korean Immigration, then the teacher writes it onto the form at the consulate in Japan.

This sounds a little fishy to me. So, does anyone have any experience with this?

Nope. Not strange.

There was a thread about this very thing recently.

Apparently, it's true.

Why only for Canadians and Americans?

Yikes, the only thing that seems consistent with immigration is that they are inconsistent.

Can anyone here please post a link to this thread? Thank you.

OP, if it's any consolation, I thought the same thing as you did. It sure would be nice if immigration would do a better job of communicating their changes. Mad There's conflicting stories out there all the time.

Recently I did the visa run. I had to provide just a number, for the application.

The numberto be provided, is the one which is on the 'blue paper' at the top of the page anyway.

At the moment, some people just get a number to quote like I did, whilst others get the 'blue paper'. Maybe it just depends on the issuing office.

I would guess that the physical piece of paper (blue paper) is being phase out, to be replaced by only needing to quote your number. I believe your details are already 'in the system' eg: your details, sponsorship info, immigration in korea.

Nothing to worry about.

Which begs the question why we still have to do this stupid visa run. I suppose it's a nice vacation but ultimately a waste of time and money.

I couldn't agree more!!! Sometimes I think they just like to watch foreigners run around like chickens with their heads cut off... maybe they get a real kick out of it and/or a power trip Evil or Very Mad All I know is that it's extremely frustrating trying to get a straight answer out of those people, especially when so much is riding on their answers. I've lost my patience with them before... I confess... now is anyone else out there brave enough to confuss this "sin" too? Laughing Arrow

If you were a Korean trying to get a visa to the US, you'd think that what we have to go through was child's play!

I've often thought that these outside visa run things were set up as an agreement between the Korean and Japanese governments to keep ferry companies in business.

Aside from being a nice short vacation, it can be a major pain in the arse if you haven't done it before. Trying to figure out what bus to take and where to get off in Japan is not a simple task. Also, finding a hotel can be quite a challenge. It's always a shocker when you discover the vast difference in prices of things between Japan and Korea. Shocked

Why can't we do these things in country? God only knows, but I have enjoyed my yearly trips to Fukuoka. Smile
