I was sure I would never see the day. I arrived in Daegu hours after the fire on line one, and line 2 has been prolonged and postponed ever since. I left the States knowing in my heart of hearts that I would really only be here six months- long enough to suffer the first semester at the uni and to give two month's notice, etc.

Well, it is almost three years later and line two opened this week- to fireworks in a truly tasteless manner, but opened none the less.

So, I climb down the goat path, through the last village in Daegu to proudly have screaming ajuma monologues via loud speaker system, to the rabbit hole. A sleek elevator drops you to the 21st century.

Damn! I live in a freakin city! I found a lamb and all sorts of lentils selling Pakistani grocer (with some help from my friends), the World Cup Stadium, and a nascent mega-city at the end of the line. I found a shop of all paper mache furniture and lamps that look like they grew from a clearing in the deep forest- where the artist/proprietor answered our calls from the back of the shop with a snuffle and a snore, so we left. Downtown opens right into a bookstore (yeah, I know the train in Seoul does too, but you guys have been a city for a long while, whereas Daegu has remained deeply countrified within the guise of tall leggo buildings and traffic), and later the line opens right into Homeplus.

Anyone else tried the new #2 line? For us out here on the west side, up against the mountain at Kiemyung, life has really gotten a lot more interesting, and easy.

I haven't tried it yet but I'm very excited. I live in Daegok in sight of Apsan and the Sang-in stop keeps me from being isolated from downtown due to taxi fare. I'm very excited about being able to get to Siji from my place now. Is there a stop precisely at Kiemyung?

Yes, there is a Kiemyung stop half way between Dong Mun and Chung Mun (the two main campus gates). It is the fifth stop from the end/beginning of the line at Muryang. Downtown used to be around 45 minutes on a stuffy bus, or 8-9,000 won in a taxi, now it is 800 won, 18 minutes, on a very clean subway. I think I hear the angels singing.

Line 3 is next and should connect Daegu to Chilseong in the next few years.

I haven't been out to Siji yet. Anything worthwhile out there?

My businessmen students told me the other night that the next line won't be for 10 years. For that I will not be here for sure!

Line 1 runs through Chilseong. You're thinking of the planned line to connect Daegu to Chilgok.

Nevertheless, the opening of line 2 is one more reason why I think Daegu is the best city in Korea.

Daegu the best city? Hmmm. Confused It has improved greatly. I think it is a good "second city", but as real cities go, Seoul is there. It has the cultural infrastructure still lacking here. A lot of people prefer "second cities", I personally prefer the biggest of the big cities- I prefer Mexico City to Guadalajara, and NYC is the best city in the U.S. I would love to live in Seoul, but I like my job and am settled here.

Isn't it right next to the North Daegu bus terminal (in buk gu)?

It's not the one at Buk gu (isn't that the one near Ali Baba?).

I believe the station is Gamsam. It's the station by the new TGIFridays. To the west of Fridays, on Dalgubeoldaero (the main street the subway runs along) there is a large market, across from the market is a small neighborhood. The Pakistani market is back in there. Like I said, a friend helped me find it. If you get over this way some time, I may be able to meet up with you and help you find it. They have ground lamb. I have plans to make some mousaka. Mmmmm.

I have the card for the Pakistani store- the phone number is 588-8812, and the address (!) appears to be 113-4 Ponji, in Gamsam Dong.

Bon Apetit!

I have been told good things about Ali Babas, and want to try it out soon.

This new line is all well and good - clean, fast, efficient, useful, much-needed, cheap - but it appears sadly lacking in the descriptions of the station names that so brightens the first line. I want to know, in garbled and confusing English, if "Yongsan" really does mean dragon mountain.
