Yesterday I was sitting in the lunch room with the other teachers and the vice principal. Two parents joined us for lunch and were chatting with the vice principal. I could gather that they were talking about the English classes and Chinese classes but not much more than that. Near the end of lunch I heard my name mentioned about 4 times within 30 seconds so my interest was piqued. One of the mothers looked at me and said "I_am_wrong is good good teacher."
After lunch some of the other teachers were telling me that the mother was telling the vice principal that her daughter talks about her English class and teacher all the time and how much she likes it. She also told the vice principal that they were unhappy with the school's chinese teacher. Apparently her daughter even writes in her diary about her English teacher and how much she likes English class.
It was good timing for me! |

Sweet. So now's a good time to discuss any little changes to the contract you might like. |

A few months ago, I accidentally broke a student's pencil case. I wrote a note to her parents telling them what happened and that I was going to buy the girl a new one to replace her old one. I hadn't done it on purpose and just wanted the parents to know what was going on.
I got a note back the next day from the parents saying "we know you wouldn't do it on purpose. you are a good teacher who cares about our kids. keep up the good work and thank you for being a good teacher"...well, words to that effect.
Just yesterday, I got another not from one of my student's aunt (his parents don's speak English very well and she does) telling me that her nephew likes my class and is learning a lot. She asked if I had any English videos or tapes that he could borrow to improve his listening.
It's things like that that make teaching the little buggers so cool.

I got a few gifts last year. A scarf and a cake to celebrate the end of my after-school "English camp". And one of my best students, her father took me out to dinner. The whole family has spot-on perfect English, it was really awesome. I'm taking him out for beers when I get back. |
