|

So I brought a laptop from home (Canada) here, but now that I'm a little more familiar with hangul I'd like to be able to throw some words around in Korean from time to time. With my Canadian keyboard is there a way to do this relatively easily? I see people tossing Korean words around here all the time; do they all have Korean keyboards, or can I join in on the fun too? |

You can buy keyboard stickers which will change your eng keyboard to eng/kor. They're meant for kids to snazz up their computers, so don't bother looking at Kim & Johnson.
I bought mine at the large office supply store in Coex, but some places like Morning Glory may very well carry them.
This was a while ago so they may be hard to find if it turned out to be a passing fad. |

You also need to download the Korean input IME if you're running windows xp.
I think it's here. Go through the list and pick the one that's right for you. |

The stickers for your keyboard are still available ( very pretty colours tho')
I was looking at them in the big office shop in COEX only a few weeks ago.
Don't need them myself as I have a dual keyboard but they did catch my eye. |

No, you don't need to download anything if you have xp; it will be in the languages and regional settings area. I don't have a Korean keyboard myself but I touch-type. I also use dvorak so I touch-type with that too. Basically the letter symbols on my keyboard are completely useless. |

Oh boy, Mith- are you ever going to love this!
Actually, everybody is going to love this!
It's a revolution in keyboard design:

"Optimus is good for any layouts—Cyrillic, Ancient Greek, Georgian, Arabic—and so on to infinity: notes, numerals, special symbols, HTML codes, mathematical functions."

That's all fine and dandy if your computer was installed with Asian language support when Windows was being set up, but most OEM comps don't come with it out of the box, especially if they're bought outside of Asia.

It's on the disk for 2000 and XP; When you buy a pc with an OEM os you still get a disk, don't you? I wouldn't know since I don't buy that kind of pc. |

Yeah, you get the disk, but most people misplace it, so a link to where you can download it seemed helpful. Laptops are OEM and, thus, are installed with generic settings that often don't include Asian language support. |

Which is why they come with a disk. I've got no sympathy for people who misplace their driver and OS disks, but anyway here's the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ime/default.mspx
If you read the page carefully, you'll notice that it more or less says "if you have 2000 or XP, use your disk."
Personally, I don't think we should let all this talk of Global IMEs distract us from the fact that THE OPTIMUS KEYBOARD IS TOTALLY COOL! |

Well, if you've got a laptop I think you're more likely to misplace your disks. I don't even know where the disks are for this work-issued laptop because the tech guy didn't hand me anything other than what was in the carrying case, so I found MS making the IME downloadable was pretty handy. I posted that same link earlier in the thread, by the way. It was just hyperlinked to text instead of a URL.
But, yeah, that keyboard is pretty neat. I like those flexible keyboards too, though. |

I didn't have to use my disks. The stuff was all stored in a compressed format, I guess, and Windows just uncompressed and installed it. You can go back and forth. |

Ah, the keyboard of bitterness? I had the great idea last week that I would make a keyboard like that. Then I asked a friend of mine what he thought and he said it's already been made. Bitterness. |

It's also been posted about on this very forum a few months back: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=41808

I didn't realize that, so now I'm going to have to do a 180 degree turn from my usual position and state that redundancy in information on this board is a good thing. |
