The place is harder to drop than you might think onced departed.
Any Good reasons to flag it once and for all? And this web included.... |

2 years ago, I wrote down the amount of time I spent in Korea piece by piece and realized that I had a total of about 5 full years in-country at the time.
Sometimes, it does make people wonder how they spend their time though. |

Something about this country gets under your skin, AND STAYS THERE.
I spent last winter in New Zealand and appreciated every minute of it, but... when I returned to teach in Korea for another year, this Canadian breathed a big sigh of relief. Why?
For ubiquitous monoculture, insular adult students, spitting, squatting, stares, observations of violence against women and a feeling of constant surveillance? No.
For wild young students, spicy foods, constant head-shaking surprises, a sense of displacement, and a culture at odds with much of my upbringing and requiring patience, appreciation of difference and an appetite for perpetual puzzlement? Yes.
I've gone from short timer to middle timer. Gord help me from becoming an old timer.
I've been here since 2002, and counting. I was sure I was gonna be out of here by 2004, then 2006, now 2007, "guarranteed", but I've said that before.
I love this island. It feels like home and like a stange place, at the same time. In that respect it's almost perfect. I must leave. It's just a question of when. (Isn't it?) |

Got here 1997...and still around.
When I got here it was for 1-2 years. Then got married and noticed I love it here.
When we go to Canada to visit my folks and friends, I am always happy to return to Busan.
I have a buddy who worked here from 2001-2004 and has been back in Canada since Jan. 2005 with his wife (korean). We talk often and he misses Busan big time. Mind you he is happy in Canada (as is his wife) but, like me he says now he has two homes. Misses Korea when in Canada and vice-versa....
Strange how you can change..... |

See you in 2 years.
A good reason to flag Korea down? About 10 other Asian countries you can teach in, for starters. |
