Even when I earned 1.2 million a month I saved money in Korea. At that time I lived with a homestay though (never bought food). However, I was traveling a lot and spending some money on TaeKwonDo classes and stuff too.
Now I earn 2.0 mil a month and save even more. I don't find it hard to save money here and I don't really work at trying to be thrifty. I'm not a big drinker or shopper though and I think that those who are probably have more of an issue saving money. |

The best I've heard off is an American friend, sending back $25 000 US a year he's gonna stay one more year so that'll be four years in total. He's on an E2 visa, goes out bugger all and has done privates since his first month
You stay out of hostess bars, don't drink out and eat out constantly. You can save heaps. Don't be a hermit tho coz you'll go stircrazy or possibly get depressed.
I go out a few times each week, cook my own meals usually and sent over $3000 US back home during December and January and I was on a 10 day vacation during that time, savings very easy |

Find a western supermarket, you can buy frozen meat by the kilo for usually 9000 won or less, then just freeze it down into smaller amounts.
My grocery bill is roughly 50 000 won a week, so its heaps cheaper than eating out 2 times a day |

Hi There,
You didn't ask how their health had suffered eating just ra-myeon, or how much of it they had in the cupboard!!
Cheap and not so nasty but people can not subsist on ra-myeon alone. |

Sorry to disappoint you, personally I need to loose 3-4 kgs otherwise, I'm disgustingly healthy.
I also eat bugger all ra-myeon, maybe twice a month at tops.
Its simple learn how to cook healthy meals, I probably eat 6 restaurant quality meals a week, that I cook myself. I enjoy cooking because it actually relaxes me.
I also don't drink during the week, coz for some strange reason I prefer to be taken seriously and be treated as a professional at work, and stinking off beer/soju the next day or being hungover gets you categorised as just another western teacher.....
But I defintley enjoy my weekends and have 2-3 cans at golf on Thursday nights
Also I've been here for a while and probably make a tad more than a new teacher, that helps a lot with saving as well..... |

I made 2.1 million won, but I had close to $550 in student loan payments every month, so I was at a disadvantage. I had to take into account the currency exchange and the fact that I had to send more than 550,000 won home (more like 650,000). I would send about 300,000 won extra home to put into savings, but that money eventually just went to all of the vacations I took while I was there.
I wasn't super disciplined and liked to shop and eat out, so I found it difficult to save a whole lot. I came home with about $1,500 plus my pension and severance. You can also earn more money if you do privates, as some of my friends did. |
