or more likely, had opened it by mistake when it was misdelivered. |
I'm not following you. If as you say it was probably opened by mistake (and I agree that is most likely) why are you losing sleep?
My first boss in Korea sorted through our mail and only passed on what he wanted us to receive. He was paranoid that two other teachers were looking for a new job. Because of his actions, they did look for a new job--after beating him up. |

Yes.
You have three choices.
Either forget about it which most sane reasonable people would do.
Or accuse random people, the postie, the security guard, and the Jajjang delivery boy of deliberately opening your mail and risk looking like an idiot.
I think Daves is making you ultra paranoid thinking that every Korean is out to screw you in some way, so your third course of action is to stop reading this board.
Seriously! |

I gather Dave's could use one less poster. I hear ya.

I think you are taking the opened mail and the poster's comment too seriously. Unless you have reason to think it was done deliberately, I'd just forget about it.
You mentioned you are a newbie. Chances are you are starting to 'hit the wall' of culture shock. It seems to hit people after 2 or 3 months. One sign is strong over-reactions to any inconvenience or problem, blaming and lashing out at Korea and Koreans for life's little hassles. Obviously I don't know if that is what is really happening to you, but you might consider it. |

Stay cool. You haven't truely made it until they start going through your trast. I get most of mail delivered to my school. Although people who leave their mail for months and months in collective mail boxes do irk me somewhat. |

You can ask your credit card company to send the statement via e-mail. I get all my stuff on-line and pay bills on-line. I never get any snail mail anymore, except for junk.
Or you can set up a video camera in your entryway and spy on people. =) |

As many of you are aware we have a website where we ship books to people. I cannot begin to tell you how many times:
1. Korean co-workers will sign for a package and never tell their foreign counterparts about the delivery.
2. Have a Korean in the office open the box and be surprised by their luck in getting free English books (calling to make sure that they do not have to pay for them )
I have never had a Korean call up asking where their package is only to have them find out it has been delivered a few days before and is sitting under someone's desk. |

The mailmen are lazy here. They deliver letters to the wrong boxes constantly. Which probaly accounts for people absent-mindedly opening eachothers mail- usually accidentally i think.
Thank God for email. |

This IS Korea. In a smaller town, I wouldn't be surprised if the neighbors were going through your mail. How many people here teaching in a small town have discovered Koreans are all up in the foreigner's business... calling the school to complain his light is on at 1 am. Weird stuff.
But again this IS Korea and it's a wonder that the postman manages to drunkly get the right mail in the right box 80% of the time. I've had a lot of misdirected mail in my box. Some I've even opened.
If someone was curious, they might have just thrown your bill out lest they tip you off you've got a looky loo. If it was an honest mistake, they'd have put it back. |
