"OTIS".

normally i don't try to force an english name on someone. however, i have this two-boy class late in the evenings and they are both named joon. one is disinterested, the other is like pinky in 'pinky and the brain'.

i named the pinky one otis. one of my best friends back home is named otis. i am praying the name will stick.

Laughing Congrats.

But you will know you have grown from the pupil to the master, O Grasshopper, when you are able to successfully convince a stubborn 13 year old girl (and daughter of your boss) NOT to give herself the nickname "Leonardo DiCaprio".

Leo's hold on Koreans is waning. They know who he is, but he's not the only game in town anymore.

I had students wanting to give themselves similar names. I simply told them they are not English names. Problem solved.

That's cool as Otis was most popular in the early 1900s, so he's pretty much guaranteed to not have the "he has my name" problem.

A kid that was at the camp I worked at this summer was named "Coolio" by his T.A. Now that's a great name! Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if a more conservative (read stodgy) teacher hasn't already tried to talk him out of using that name. Sad

Skeletor.

For six months I taught a Skeletor.

Also had a Dumbo, and -- get this -- his parents insisted on that name. They recently moved to an English speaking country. I wonder how long that name stuck.
