"OTIS".
normally i don't try to force an english name on someone. however, i have this two-boy class late in the evenings and they are both named joon. one is disinterested, the other is like pinky in 'pinky and the brain'.
i named the pinky one otis. one of my best friends back home is named otis. i am praying the name will stick. |

Congrats.
But you will know you have grown from the pupil to the master, O Grasshopper, when you are able to successfully convince a stubborn 13 year old girl (and daughter of your boss) NOT to give herself the nickname "Leonardo DiCaprio".

| Leo's hold on Koreans is waning. They know who he is, but he's not the only game in town anymore. |

| I had students wanting to give themselves similar names. I simply told them they are not English names. Problem solved. |

That's cool as Otis was most popular in the early 1900s, so he's pretty much guaranteed to not have the "he has my name" problem.
A kid that was at the camp I worked at this summer was named "Coolio" by his T.A. Now that's a great name! Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if a more conservative (read stodgy) teacher hasn't already tried to talk him out of using that name. |

Skeletor.
For six months I taught a Skeletor.
Also had a Dumbo, and -- get this -- his parents insisted on that name. They recently moved to an English speaking country. I wonder how long that name stuck. |
