I see on the other movie recommendations thread everybody is listing movies everyone's heard of. How about some obscure or just hard-to-find gems?

1. Goodbye, Dragon Inn. Wordless and plotless but beautiful in its own way. I think I could watch it all day.

2. Six-String Samurai. I've spent 10 years trying to get ahold of this one.

3. Dead Man. A black-and-white Johnny Depp western? Sure, why not.

4. Sleepaway Camp. I brushed my teeth after watching this one. It made me feel dirty.

5. The Last Days. Best Holocaust documentary I've seen (though I haven't seen Shoah).

Dead man is really good, esp with the music by Neil Young. The music is very good. The Indian scenes are really good esp if you like North West Indians. The hero seemed to go from Arizona to Washington.

That was a mediocre movie at best. It's more fun to talk about than watch.

10 years? I stumbled across it in the video store a few months ago ....

Trees Lounge - Directed by one of my favorite actor/directors Steve Buscemi.

animal house - good prison movie also directed by buscemi

waking life - great movie for anyone with even a vague interest in philosophy

ghost world - not really that obscure, but a great subtle movie that many people wouldn't have seen because there are no guns or car chases

Hoop Dreams - fantastic docu-movie that follows a couple of kids from poor-lower middle class trying to make it to the NBA.

Crumb - great documentary about the eccentric cartoonist Robert Crumb.

The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia (1981) with Dennis Quaid, Kristy McNichol and Mark Hamill. I saw it three times at the theater on its opening weekend and cried each time. The drama moved me like few films have. But then again, I was 12, though it was by no means meant for children.

Heathers (1989) with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. A well-made twisted dark film about high school students. Fun and quirky without being too weird or gory.

Map of the Human Heart (1992) with Jason Scott Lee. About an Inuit boy who returns after considerable time displaced in Montreal. There's a love interest too. One of those films that makes one appreciate the art of filmmaking in all of its beauty and power.

Simon Birch (1998) with Ashley Judd and a bit of Jim Carrey. The film version of the bestseller A Prayer for Owen Meany , a book I've tried three times to read but have been bored before page one hundred each time. But the film is wonderful, has a simplistic charm and top-notch production values. I'm glad Judd was in it because otherwise I probably wouldn't have given this great film a chance.

Sunshine (1999) with Ralph Fiennes. Directed by the legendary Istvan Szabo, this epic follows several generations of a Hungarian family. Fiennes best dramatic work playing several very different characters in different eras. A don't-miss for those who love drama or period pieces or both.

The Conversation - Gene Hackman

Night Moves - another Gene Hackman and a young Melanie Griffith (yum)

Darker Than Amber - Rod Taylor The first movie that I ever saw that was rated M. (Shows you how old, since the US rating system hasn't used M for years.)

Invaders From Mars (1953 version)- When I was a kid, this movie scared the beejezuz out of me.

Dead Again - Kenneth Branaugh

House of Games - David Mamet (dark humor - and lots of useful info for con-artists)
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Steve Martin and Michael Caine - funny comedic conning ...
Diggstown (James Woods, Louis Gossett Jr., Bruce Dern - amusing study of veteran cons pitted against each other in the fight game...)
Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows (Canada's hero vs. Vince McMahan and Shawn Michaels - infamous Montreal screw-over...)
Motorpyscho - Russ Meyers (misunderstood drive-in movie master Question ...)

A passion for murder
(1992) Michael Nouri, Joanna Pacula, Michael Ironside, Mickey Jones, Brent Neale, Arne Olsen.....Cabbie ( Nouri) agrees to drive a mysterious woman (Pacula) from Detroit to Seatle, unaware she's being hunted by a government agent (Ironside).

-nice dark suspense. Alwys like movies that take place on the road.
another great little fugitive movie with all the right ingredients is

A Boy called hate (1995)
Scott Caan, Missy Crider, Elliott Gould, Adam Beach, James Caan directed by Mitch Marcus.
James Caan's son Scott makes his feature debut in this tale of a troubled teen who saves a young woman from a rapist. Afraid he's killed the attacker, he and the would-be victim hit the road and find romance as fugitives.

Both those two were utterly slated by reviewers. This one is little known but well acclaimed:

A Short film about love Krzysztof Kieslowski (Poland, 1988)
Artur Barcis , Miroslawa Chopjnacka , Stanislaw Gawlik , Tomasz Gradowski , Rafal Imbro , Stefania Iwinska , Olaf Linde Lubaszenko.

Teenager Tomek (Lubaszenko) discovers the pleasures of the flesh come at a price in this powerful exploration of sexual obsession.

No mention of "Eraserhead," yet? David Lynch.

How about "Men in White?" The absolutely worst movie I've ever seen. A terrible attempt at parody. Some moives are so bad, they're funny, and some movies (this one) are so, so bad, they just make you feel ashamed.

"Chicken Park" is another bad parody I saw here in Korea. It was filmed in and by Italians, but comletely in English. Lame stuff, but more in the "so bad it's funny" catagory."

"Farewell My Concubine" Not really obscure at all, but had to mention it as some people do not watch foreign films. This is my all-time favorite movie. Gong Li is in a lot of great stuff.

"The Terror of Tinytown." You may have heard of it, but I've actually seen it. It's a western with an entirely midget cast.

Un Chien Andalou- Bunuel and Dali inspire the Pixies' song Debaser

La Jettee- Inspired 12 Monkeys

Les Maitres Fous-defines documentary in a way that will leave you queasy

In a different mood:

The Warriors
The Wanderers
-2 classic "gang" films

Coup Deville-A discussion of the lyrics to Louie Louie

Fantasia 2000- Many missed the sequel to Fantasia

A Boy and His Dog-Don Johnson's best movie supplied by Harlan Ellison

Soylent Green-Heston's best. Devours Ben Hur

For those who want the next level-

(and have the patience)

The Saragossa Manuscript- A man during war finds a book that's a story about another man who tells a story about meeting ghosts who tell their story about someone else who tells another story... And it's in Polish

This is supposed to have been Jerry Garcia's favourite movie.

Props to the Waking Life, my favorite movie of all time. For those who know Richard Linklater, it's like Slacker done exponentially. Or existentially?

Attack of the killer tomatoes.
