I've dated a couple and it's an odd question. Being a GI is their job, same as teaching is mine- it doesn't define who they are.

I went out with a female GI for a short while. She was cool and after meeting her friends I came away with a better impression of GIs that I'd had before. There's a lot of reasons to be in the army, and there are a lot of GIs who aren't flag-waving Republicans (of course there are probably more who are).
Its pretty low, but its cool to date a GI just to get in on the all the perks they have. Oh, the taco bell, the spaghettios, the American TV, the American electrical outlets, riding along grass-lined streets in a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
She and I were never particularly serious or deep, so everything was cool between us when we kinda drifted apart. But there is a big problem in that their lifestyle is so different from mine. They speak in this acronym-filled jargon that makes your head spin. it seems like everything has a acronym for it in the army. And they were all younger than my by like 3 years. Which isn't a lot, but it shows sometimes. and there's just the general sense that their lives are headed in a totally different place than mine (neither better or worse, just different).
i should say that i'm american, so there was a lot about her personality that was really familar to me. i guess you should keep that in mind if your not american.
probably not the info you were hoping for, and its all generalized, but thats all i know.

I'll second that. I have a lot more in common with them. And although I'm pretty anti-military, I've found that the GIs I have dated don't take their work home with them.

What's an MBA?

I always wanted to date an officer. Sigh~ think Richard Gere in "An Officer and a Gentleman"... GOD, he was FINE. Or Tom Cruise in "Top Gun"... Seems to me they're all taken, though. The downside, though, is that they get deployed. My uncle was a commander of a submarine, he would be away from home 6 months at a time. He and my aunt divorced. She had several guys that helped ease her loneliness...

You had access to the PX and walked past the Miracle Whip to get to the spaghettios? I have to question your sanity.

Ok a couple more questions......

Why an officer? More educated, what's the difference?

How do you know if he is married, don't you just have to take his word for it being here? Obviously these types won't be wearing a ring...and can easily lie...what are some ways to know?

An officer wears his stripes on his sleave (that's the one you want), whereas an enlisted man wears his on his shoulder and goes by the rank of Lieutenant, Captain, or Major (avoid them!). You want one who goes by the rank of "Sergeant". They're really intelligent fellows and have very broad intellects. Go army over air force, as the former tend to be much more rounded persons. Also, go for the ones with shorter hair, unless their black, in which case you want the ones with compressed fros. If you're into the under-30 crowd you'll want an infantryman; if 35+ suits you get a supplyman.

So head into Hongdae Friday night and let me know if this advice helps find you the man of your dreams. It sounds like you're steering yourself in the right direction to find the man of your dreams. You go girl!

Oh, and if you want to increase the odds that they're not really married go younger. You'd be surprised how mature and considerate younger soldiers can be, and very few under 23 will be in the army because they're running away from their family.

I lived near Camp Yongin, and my evenings hanging out with GIs never amounted to much other than a few flings and some great stories about a guy who got repeatedly fired and rehired at a Pizza Hut in Nevada, and his justification for stabbing his boss.

The guys there tended to be very young (for my tastes) and not too educated. They had a lovely wide-eyed innocence to them when they found their way off the base; to be a female in their presence is to understand the meaning of *gratitude*. They were very conscious of rank and the pecking order among them was enforced, sometimes with boots applied to heads.

It's a hard hard life they live, cooped up together. Most of them are very depressed and angry. Those that aren't probably should be.
