in thailand? why not change won to baht at incheon airport. somebody on another thread said not to chane you won to baht in korea. is the exchange rate so far off here that you'd be better off getting clipped twice? any suggestions?

I usually take enough baht to get started (taxi, etc.) and use ATMs the rest of the time. It's safe and convenient, and a decent exchange rate. You need an international ATM card to your Korean account, and you don't get one automatically, you have to ask at the bank.

On my last trip, I had 130,000 won on me for my return, and it was robbed from my hotel room. I know it was my own stupid mistake, but it's always wise to not carry too much cash.

I know it sounds silly to exchange money twice, but it really is better to do it that way when traveling to certain countries from Korea.

Another example would be traveling to Japan. Won is worthless in Japan, so don't take it there to exchange it.

Same with Thailand and several other countries in Korea. It would seem that the exchange rates would be the same in any country, but they aren't.

I always exchanged my won into dollars (American) and then exchanged my dollars into baht IN Thailand. Or when I went to the Philippines, I exchanged my dollars into pesos IN the Philippines.

I can't remember the exchange for Thailand the last time I went, but for the Philippines, it was:

1,000 won for 23 pesos
1,200 won for $1 USD

and in the Philippines:
$1 USD for 46 pesos.

Crazy, huh? The exchange places are always open in the airport in Thailand, so it won't be a problem to exchange. Or if you're a bit concerned to not have any baht at all upon arrival, exchange 10,000-20,000 won just to have some and save the majority of your USD to exchange in country.

Cool

Yea, do not take won. You'll lose %25 of your money if you exchange.

Yes, do not take Won to Thailand. Take enough for the bus to the airport etc and then not more as its a security hazard. Co not exchange Won to Baht or Won to anything else. Change the Won to $ in Korea, then to Baht. I was mad at myself several times for exchaging over there. You will lose 25-30% of your money. The xchange places in Thailand will not let you buy $ with won. You have to exchange the money in Korea.

40 baht = 1$

1000W = 1$

1000W = 30 Baht

You will honestly feel the pinch.

I have an US account and a Korean ATM account and I try not use the Korean ATM account.
