A lot of talk has been made about China becoming the upcoming powerhouse... this is course course assuming North and South Korea don't unify first in which case Korea will become the number 1 world power, hehehehe.
Seriously, though, does it scare you that Asia could rise to the top?
If Asia was committed to western liberal ideas it wouldn't bother me so much, but we all know that is not the generally the case. |

I'm not worried, if only because I don't think China's economic future is as rosy as everyone seems to think. They're hiding a lot of rot in the system. |

China may not be dedicated to democracy, but they are dedicated to having a nice, peaceful world in which they can make a lot of money. |

I used to worry about it, then I moved here.
Seriously. We've all seen the education system around here. I'll start to worry about it when most Korean degrees get equivalency in Canada.

That's the thing. They are commited to liberal western ideals, they just don't get it yet. Koreans want our cultural power and our lifestyles even if they don't understand the principles behind them. And by ingesting masses of our technology/pop culture/language, they are ingesting large chunks of our values as well.
I think democracy and Confucianism are mutually exclusive and here we are, in a stable, liberal democracy.
So no. I don't worry. The only way they are going to beat us is by becoming us. |

I watched the DVD "Hero" a couple of weeks ago and was thinking about this topic. I was most disturbed by the emphasis placed on sacrificing the individual for the group. The emperor's point was that wars of conquest that bring ultimate peace are justifiable. That sent a shiver down my spine. |

Isn't it inevitable that China will one day be the world's superpower? I just don't think the USA has the population base to keep it up for much longer, especially with all the debt they are incurring.
Might be a welcome change when the USA's empire crumbles. |
