Why do the restaurants in Itaewon charge 10% VAT? If I go to the local kim bap jip, I don't pay tax, so why do I pay VAT in Itaewon? |

You do pay it, it is just not separately shown. |

I thought it was just restaurants over a certain size?
(Or is that the service charge?) |

I think that's service charge SJ: all businesses here - registered businesses - are locked into the VAT system. If you ask for an official receipt, as you can, they will (or should) give you one showing the VAT separately. |

And then there are now many Chinese restaurants around Seoul that are charging the VAT on top of what would be considered regular prices with the VAT already added in.
I'd like to see the books on that one. |

The VAT in Korean is 10%. Everything else has already been said. |

It's true for some places.
I posted before about Thai Orchid charging 10% twice. |

That'll probably be 10% for tax and 10% for service charge - common practice in all big hotels. |

It's not just an Itaewon thing. Ask for a receipt from a fast-food franchise anywhere in the country, and you'll see the VAT itemised there and it will be 10%.

No, you're not wrong. Foreign-owned businesses charge VAT. They do that because they're businesses, not because they're foreign-owned. |

To all the VAT defenders, this is what irks me about it. Yes, Kimbap Heaven charges you VAT, but they give you the full price, including VAT, right there on the menu. I like this system. I'd also prefer it if all the curry houses and such would just do that with their menus and be done with it, so I could know the real price of something up front and know what I'm buying.
Sure, it's the law, but as far as I'm concerned it looks like people taking advantage of the law to slap on some extra fees. |

You must love it in USA then when sales tax is never shown and always added at what (to me) seem random percentages.
As I see it, it's just them damn Yanks trying to squeeze a few more cents from us poor visitors.
