|
|
Hi everyone. I'm in that chaotic "shop around" mode and trying to sort out the reality from the BS. I wondered (for those of you that have completed more than 1 contract in Korea), where do you begin when you look for jobs, and how much do you expect to earn in general? There are million and one options/positions and I find myself overwhelmed with sorting out the good from the bad from the "insane". Do you use recruiters or post your resume online? I have 3 years experience and in the past, I've generally gotten jobs through friends already abroad referring me. I tend to mistrust recruiters and I no longer know the reasonable expectations of the field with the present economy (Seoul area). What is a good target salary for an experienced Canadian teacher in your opinion? I want to work in Seoul, hagwon I suppose, not into split shifts or insane hours. I was thinking min 2.2 but I'd love it if more were possible. Anyhow, advice, comments-all appreciated... |

As a general rule of thumb of hagwons is: Experience = jack squat.
I'd say try for some university job or something. |

That would be awesome but I don't have TESL or an MA TESL |

I heard a friend mention that and I've never heard of them offered to foreigners. How are they for pay? Where are they advertised? I'd LOVE to know more about them. |

You've never heard of them being offered to foreigners? This board has had numberous threads with people (foreigners) talking about their public school jobs for a long while now.
As for your questions: Pay depends on several variables such as experience, certifications, rural vs urban locations and so forth. It seems to vary between 2.1-2.5 million a month from what I've seen. Generally they are advertised by recruiters though I've heard of some schools recruiting directly. Hours tend to be longer than at a hakwon, although it it is possible (depending on how understanding your principal is) to arrange to leave when your classes are over. Of course it seems that only a minority of public school teachers can arrange this...but it never hurts to try. As for other things it is pretty much your standard 9-5 job. |

Someone has to make this a sticky:
FOR A GOOD MANY UNIVERSITY JOBS YOU CAN GET IN WITH JUST A BA. |

the_beaver,
how does one go about finding a University job in Seoul with only a BA and 3/4 years of teaching experience? Are there any particular sites where such jobs are often advertised or is it only through word of mouth that such positions are found?
Any info you or anyone else could give would be good. |

I'd go for a decent job over pay to start. If you go public school, there will be better opportunities for decent, scheduled overtime than if you go hogwan. And seriously, if you're an experienced teacher you'd find at least 80% of hogwans appalling places to work. |
