I teach a debate class for a group of middle school students who are very advanced and I'm running out of interesting topics. No topic is taboo.
Suggestions? |

Topics:
1. Should parents give middle school students money? (allowance)
debates can be yes or no with reasons why or why not?
(also, how much)
2. Should parents give middle school students cell phones?
(are middle school students responsible enough?)
3. Are computer games a bad influence on middle school students?
(some say that violent games lead to violent behavior in teens)
4. Should middle school students be allowed to start dating?
5. Is studying English a waste of time/money or is it a valuable
thing for middle school students to be doing?
6. Is the Korean education system better or worse than the ones of
Western countries? Why or why not?
7. Should middle schools be separate all boys and all girls schools or
are mixed schools a good idea? Why?
8. Should girls join the military? why or why not?
9. Should Japanese comic books be banned? Why or why not?
10. Should teenagers be allowed to drive motorcycles, if so... how old
do they have to be? why or why not? |

These are practice topics I gave out to the kids participating in a debating tournament at my high school:
This house believes that...
... American troops should not leave Iraq.
... growing Chinese military power destabilizes the Asia-Pacific region.
... Korean rice farmers should be protected by the government.
... certain laws must be broken.
... one should never break a law.
... citizens have a right to privacy.
... we should have free health-care for all people in our country.
... the college entrance exam is unfair.
... the UN has become corrupt and ineffective and should be abolished.
... selfish countries only concerned with their own interests make the UN ineffective.
... the financial debts of poor countries must be forgiven immediately.
... religion has a place in the classroom.
... the recent riots in France are the result of racism.
... the SAT is a very accurate measure of academic excellence.
... unhealthy foods should be taxed because of the negative effects they have on society.
... the U.S. must place itself under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
... all forms of violence should be rejected by all individuals and states.
... there are times when states or individuals must use violence.
... the minimum wage should be raised.
... the sale or procurement of human eggs for research purposes is unethical.
... human cloning will greatly benefit our society. |
