Hello, all you "Korea" experts. I have been following the posts on this forum and the ones on China for a couple of weeks, as I am getting ready to make a move to either Korea or to China. I have been living in Mexico for the last 3 years and am ready for a change, although it has been a great experience and one that I highly recommend. But back to my original point, does anyone have any advice on how to find a school where I might negotiate buying my plane ticket up front? I have been in touch with several schools that seem really great, but all want to re-imburse airfare after a couple of weeks or a month. I can certainly understand their reasons, but I just don't have the means to save up $800 in Mexico easily. ARE there schools that will pre-pay airfare, or am I shooting for the impossible? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks alot.....

it used to be the norm to prepay airfares, but so many schools lose money on this generally (midnight runs, incompetant teachers etc) that they wanna see a commitment from the teacher first. my new boss also told me that an increasing number of foreigners get the ticket then disappear after arriving at the airport itself.......just go off & do privates or look for another school!
first time i came here it was paid; second time they wanted me to pay, i pleaded poverty and they paid; this time though i was in a hurry so there was no time to argue..........i just got a relative to put it on their card, then wired the money straight back home when i got the cash a couple of days after arrival.
basically if the school really want you (as in, there are no more takers) then you can probably get it paid...........just may take a few days negotiation!
good luck |

If you sign a contract with a Korean hakwan ("school"), it's not a good idea to buy your own plane ticket. Click FAQ and/or Search. |

You appear unaware that the days of every Koraen school prepaying the airfare for teachers to come over have passed into the long night. |
