I have been here for a few months now but am still having a difficult time sleeping at night. I have never had this problem before in my life and figure maybe my new surroundings or stress is what is keeping me up at night.
In all seriousness here (please no cheeky comments), what can I do to help myself sleep? Looking for natural ways to combat sleeplessness.
Thanks.

Try Melatonin for a couple of nights: available in most pharmacies and some supermarkets.

This is not a drug, btw.

I have used an over the counter medication called Zalden, available at most pharmacies here, but have stopped using it now as I sleep ok. Exercise is a good natural remmedy, btw.

the dude at the international clinic in itaewon is pretty easy with a mild sleep aid called ambien.

i went in and said "i have trouble sleeping on international flights" and he gave me 10 tablets, no questions asked.

of course, the consultation fee was 30,000.

melatonin is pretty good too. as is valerian root.

and regular exercise.

and buhjhayzzz.

i have trouble sleeping periodically, too. the last 3 weeks of october were pretty bad.

i started exercising this week, i take taekkyon classes. i've noticed that i'm getting to sleep faster and sleeping through the night. i think exercise does it for me.

also, i try to wind down about 1/2 hour before i go to bed (this means being ready for bed earlier). i lay in bed, listen to music and try to relax my mind.
if i try to go to bed right after being on the computer, working, or doing something mentally stimluating i can't go to sleep. i'll be up all night.

try winding down before bed....candles, dim lighting, just relax.

How about a long hot shower (or even better, a bath) before going to bed? Also, yoga is good for relaxation.

You might check out self-hypnosis on the internet. It will give you some ideas for techniques that have worked. The main trick is to stop thinking and one way is to think about emotionally neutral things, like numbers and focusing on muscles.

Soju.

It makes you sleep like a baby - real deep sleep.

I had dreadful sleep problems in my first month here but now they're gone, thank God. Teaching knackers me out. It took a schedule of 'up at 7.15, bed at 12pm', 'teaching classes of 40' and the odd bit of Soju to get my body back to normal. Now I can afford to dispense with the mid-week Soju.

Are Valium and Tomazapam available in Korea on prescription?

I second the exercise route. I suck at sleeping but since I started gymming and swimming regularly its just never been an issue anymore.

Also keep the caffiene down! Green tea, coffee, cola its all rife with caffiene and its noticeable if i drink a bottle of diet coke at 9pm instead a glass of milk or orange juice.

In my experience it is most definitely not minor. A friend in college was prescribed it while she was recovering from a serious trauma. Anyway, if you force yourself to stay awake after taking it you will experience some wild and occassionally disturbing hallucinations. You'll also be very passive, unfrightened, and totally unable to remember anything in the morning.

Monitor your caffeine intake throughout the day. Ditto with the exercise thing.
