|

I have been offered a job in Gimcheon and it the conditions sound good (decent salary, acceptable hours etc). What I need to know is what is it like to live there? I wanted Seoul or Pusan but I'm finding it difficult to get a job because I'm not American or Canadian. I much prefer a busy, cosmopolitan vibe to a quiet rural setting. I grew up in a small country town and I hated it - too quiet and always seeing the same faces and places etc.
Can anyone tell me what to expect if I do go to Gimcheon? |

It's a small town, one cinema that I can remember, a Lotteria and an outdoor market, and not much more. It's on the train route, so you can ride the train about 25 minutes to Gumi, a medium-sized city that has a decent walking street, a foreigner bar and a nice cinema; or Daegu is about an hour away on the train and has everything from Bennigan's to great shopping and a Kyobo Bookstore. |

Gimcheon has a population of about 160,000 people, 80,000 within the city limits the rest in the surrounding countryside. It has an Emart, HannaMart, cinema, McDonalds, 2 Lotterias, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Davinchi coffee and recently a Dunkin Donuts. Gumi is 15 minutes away by train, Daegu is 45 minutes (cost 3,900 won one way). Gimcheon has clean air, nice mountains surrounding it, plenty of nice parks and will host the National Games next year. As far as foriegners go (English teachers) there are currently 6. There is a sports stadium and currently under construction is an indoor areana. The new public library was recently completed 4 years ago and you can watch dvds in their dvd room for free.
If you're looking to party every night then Gimcheon isn't for you. If you just want to work during the week and party on the weekends then Gimcheon is perfect as it's close enough(and cheap enough) to Daegu to go there every weekend. |

The most recent poster is accurate in his/her description of the city's offerings. One thing missing, though, are the high number of anti-foreigners who live in the Hyundai Apartment complex around the corner from the E-Mart, which is past the river near the outskirts of town.
When I had to work at the Alphabet City English Language School for Lee Youngae, a beautiful and kind person married to a Houston, TX, engineer, and her volatile brother from Andong City, loads of locals would give me crap for being a caucasian male from the U.S.
On the whole, though, most of the locals I ran into were quite acceptable in their behavior. In fact, the pizza joint at the intersection of the area around the Hyundai Apartment complex in question is run by great people, as are the two hofs to its left as one looks out the doors of the pizza joint at the street, etc., etc.
Try out the city: You may like it!
Sincerely,
Roch
Yes, Gimcheon City is a pretty good place in which to live for whatever period of time. |
