|
|
I was having a conversation with a co-worker who had questions about an opperation she was thinking of having for her 11-year-old son over the winter break. It didn't take me too long to figure out what she was talking about. She was wondering about western medical practices and opinion on the matter. Since she seemed open-minded about things I resisted the urge to blurt out "why the hell do something that's painful, maybe traumatic, and not medically necessary to your son?!"
Where the hell did Koreans get this idea from? It's not a traditional Korean practice, is it? I have a problem with infant circumcision, but this just seems looney. Anyways, I think I may have helped talk her out of it, as she seemed quite hesitant. Does Korean medical opinion think this is a good idea, and why? |

Man if your Jewish you do it but other wise there is no medical evidence that it helps anything. If we weren't met to have that piece of skin then god would have made us with out it. Apparently its supposed to desensitize the *beep* and thus sex is not as enjoyable, according to some studies. |

Do a search on Balantis, and you'll learn a lot.
It's all about cleanliness. It's a whole lot easier to keep it clean, and uninfected. That may not seem as big of a deal to those who take a lot of time to clean it. |

Oh yeah? My girlfriend's older brother got circumcised a few days before he got married. He was at least 30. |

Good job dissuading her. Why not let your son have a choice what to do with his *beep*? It's his *beep*, after all. |

Well, sure...if you're a slob who showers only once in a blue moon, or if you live in the desert like the people who originally came up with the surgery. Otherwise, it doesn't make a difference. |

It should be illegal to circumcise your children. It's a barbaric practice with no known benefit (perhaps it reduces the incidence of penile cancer which is rare these days by 1% or something miniscule) and the balanitis problem can be avoided without reducing to surgery (by keeping the area clean).
But associated with lots of complications: the sad story of David Reimer:

The tragedy of David (initially named Bruce) Reimer of Winnipeg, Manitoba, is seldom blamed on circumcision, as it should be.... |
as well as less devastating complications such as reduced sensation during sex.
People think mistakenly it's better to have it done as a baby, as if an infant can't feel pain and mental trauma as much as an adult
It's mainly ignorance and people following trends - all their friends have circumcised their sons at age 1, so they think their sons should have it done at the same age, if not for religious/cultural reasons. |
