It's a few minutes long and not graphic, as the person with the camera was some distance away. Probably could have wound up the subject of the next town meeting if caught.

The video looked pretty authentic, as far as I could tell. One question though:

After the guy was shot, he seemed to fall straight to the ground. Wouldn't he have been tied to the post so as to prevent him from trying to run?

The audio wasn't very good when I watched it, so maybe this was explained.

Human body is pretty heavy. If his hands were tied then his body would have just flopped down. Any way he was blind folded making running kind of hard. I think more SK should see this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the response.

Of course, we don't know exactly what his crime was. I think the translation said something along the lines of him being a "traitor against the Party and the people of Korea", but I would guess that in North Korea, all crimes are decribed in such terms.

Interesting.

If it's geninue it's moving and it's proof that people who think there is ever going to be a revolution in the DPRK anytime soon are fooling themselves.

I found more information about the clip at the Life Funds for North Korean Refugees website http://www.northkoreanrefugees.com/dvd/.
Quote:
This video footage was secretly taped then passed from hand to hand along a chain of defectors to bring it out of North Korea. When it reached Japan, One independent news producer immediately acquired the rights to the footage.

While you can see the 3 minute clip for free, they're asking $30 USD for the DVD.
Quote:
It is our firm belief that open exposure of these practices will help bring an immediate stop to the repatriation of North Korean refugees and will encourage other countries to extend them protection.

The DVD disc carries 12 minutes of visual proof, clear confirmation that the stories of public executions really do happen -- with frightening regularity.
I would think that if the objective is to get as many people as possible to see it, they'd upload the whole thing. Yes, I know it takes tons of bandwidth for that, but there is IRC, Kazaa and other file sharing networks out there. That way people can have access and people could circulate it freely. I just strikes the wrong chord with me that someone acquired rights to this. However, I'm not sure how media law works in Japan or if what they've written above is accurate, but assuming it is correct, my feeling is this is not footage that one should be looking to "own" and it should be freely shared and distributed.

I guess that's just my idealism showing...

not to piss on the parade NOR to say it doesn't happen but another video something like this was released a few months ago and was proven as fake. In fact, the article i read said that there are a few groups in Japan and SK who make these videos

though this one surely seems more authentic

I see no real reason to doubt its authenticity. Just think what would have happened to the "traitor" if they'd been caught filming. NEXT !!!

Oh boy, and we thought the Southerners were CHAUVINIST pigs now, just wait until "unification" Shocked
